Chapter 7 - The Unveiling

By noon, the estate was silent once more. The venom had been extracted, the traitors exiled, and the cold, oppressive atmosphere that had gripped the halls for months seemed to dissipate with the autumn sun breaking through the clouds.
Clara woke up slowly, blinking against the bright morning light pouring through the lace curtains of the master bedroom. The heavy sedative had worn off, leaving a dull, manageable ache in her arms where the sharp agony had been. She looked down at the crisp white bandages covering her skin, pristine and properly dressed.
She tried to sit up, but a sudden shadow moved beside the bed.
""Don't strain yourself,"" Dominic's voice came, low and gentle.
Clara pulled the duvet up to her chin, her eyes darting around the massive, masculine bedroom. ""Dominic... what time is it? The kitchen—the breakfast service—""
""The kitchen staff has been completely replaced,"" Dominic said, stepping to the side of the bed with a silver tray. On it was a cup of hot chamomile tea with honey, fresh sliced fruit, and warm buttered toast. ""And you will never cook another meal in this house unless you genuinely want to.""
Clara looked at the tray, then up at him, bewildered. ""Where is your mother? She’ll be furious if she sees you doing this.""
""My mother is gone, Clara. For good. And Vivian with her.""
Clara stared at him, her lips parting in disbelief. ""Gone? But... they’re your family. Your blood.""
Dominic set the tray on the nightstand and sat on the edge of the mattress. For the first time since she had met him, his hardened, ruthless demeanor was completely stripped away, replaced by an exhaustion and vulnerability that shocked her. He reached out, his rough, calloused fingers gently taking her small, uninjured hand.
""You are my family, Clara,"" he said, his voice thick with raw emotion. ""I brought you into this house to protect you from your father's enemies, but I was too blind, too caught up in my wars, to see that the real monsters were living under my roof. I read your ledger in the cellar.""
Clara’s heart stopped. ""You... you found it?""
""I read every single word,"" Dominic said, his grip tightening gently. ""Every insult you endured, every burn you hid, every threat you took to keep my name clean. You suffered in the dark while I sat at the head of the table like a fool. I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you, Clara. If you will let me.""
A tear slipped from Clara's eye, tracing down her cheek, but this time it wasn't from pain. For six months, she had felt like an unwanted stray, a burden waiting to be discarded. Now, looking into the eyes of the most feared man in the city, she saw nothing but reverence, devotion, and an unyielding promise of safety.

""I thought you hated me,"" she whispered, her voice cracking. ""I thought you only married me out of pity.""
""I married you because from the second I saw you standing up to your father's creditors in that alley six months ago, you had more courage in your little finger than any capo in this city,"" Dominic confessed, bringing her hand to his lips and pressing a tender kiss to her knuckles. ""I stayed away because I thought I would taint you. I thought I was too dark for someone as good as you. But I was wrong. You belong right here, beside me.""
