Chapter 5 - The Ledger in the Cellar

Dawn broke over the Moretti estate in shades of slate gray and iron. The rain had cleared, leaving the grounds wrapped in a thick, chilling fog.

Dominic hadn't slept a wink. Leaving Matteo to guard Clara's door with strict orders to let no one inside—not even the kitchen staff—Dominic descended the winding stone staircase into the mansion’s sprawling wine cellar. The air down here was cold, smelling of ancient stone, damp earth, and French oak barrels.

At the far end of the corridor, past the racks of vintage Bordeaux, was the heavy oak door to the dry provisions pantry. Dominic pushed it open.

Inside, the room was spartan. Steel shelves held preserved goods, heavy iron pots, and sacks of imported flour. But on the cold concrete floor in the corner, half-hidden behind an empty vegetable bin, Dominic saw something that made his heart lurch into his throat.

A folded woolen blanket. A small tin of burn salve, completely empty. And a battered notebook with a floral cover.

Dominic walked over and picked up the notebook. As he flipped through the pages, the full, sickening scope of the past six months unfolded before his eyes. It wasn't a diary of self-pity; it was a meticulous ledger written in Clara’s neat, flowing handwriting.

She had tracked every grocery purchase, down to the penny, proving how Beatrice and Vivian had been systematically skimming hundreds of thousands of dollars from the household accounts into offshore shell companies. More than that, Clara had logged every single task demanded of her, every verbal threat, and every instance of sabotage.

October 12: Beatrice threw out the sauce and poured boiling oil into the stockpot when I turned my back. Told Dominic I burned it out of stupidity.

November 3: Locked in the cold room for four hours because I refused to forge Dominic's signature on the harbor lease transfer for Falcone.

November 24: Vivian demanded I bake the entire Thanksgiving menu under her name or she would tell Dominic I stole her diamond tennis bracelet.

Clara had not been an aloof, frightened wife hiding from him. She had been a prisoner enduring psychological warfare to protect him from a coup right under his nose, enduring the agony in silence because she believed he would take his mother's side.

Dominic slammed the ledger shut, the sound echoing through the subterranean arches like a gunshot.

""Matteo!"" he roared into the corridor.

Matteo appeared at the base of the stairs within seconds. ""Boss?""

""Gather the house guard. Bring Beatrice and Vivian down to the formal dining room right now. In their nightgowns. Do not let them touch their phones. Do not let them pack.""

""And the Falcone situation at the docks?""

A cold, feral smile touched Dominic's lips—the look that had earned him the title of the Grim Reaper of New York. ""Tell Silvio Falcone I received his Thanksgiving greeting. And tell our men to prepare the harbor.""
