Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The recoil bucked violently through my wrists, sending a sharp jolt of pain through my fractured ribs, but I didn't drop the gun. The bullet caught Enzo directly in the right shoulder, spinning him backward with a wet scream of shock and agony. His shotgun clattered uselessly across the concrete floor.

His remaining enforcer lunged forward with a combat knife, his face twisted in rage, ready to cut my throat.

He never took a second step.

A single gunshot cracked from the doorway behind them, blowing through the enforcer’s temple with terrifying force. The man crumpled like a sack of wet sand, lifeless before he hit the ground.

Dante stepped through the smoke.

His face was streaked with soot and rainwater, his dark sweater torn at the shoulder, but his eyes were completely, undeniably lethal. He held his weapon with a steady, relaxed grip as he stepped over the fallen enforcer, kicking Enzo’s shotgun into the far corner of the room.

Enzo was sprawled against the steel frame of the vault, clutching his shattered shoulder, blood pouring between his fingers. He looked up at Dante with wide, terrified eyes, the cocky arrogance of an old-world mob boss completely erased.

""Dante... wait..."" Enzo choked out, gasping for air. ""Let's talk... we can split the port... fifty-fifty... you keep the city contracts—""

Dante didn't even look down at him. His eyes were entirely locked on me. He saw the gun still smoking in my hands, the steady determination in my posture, and the fact that I was standing on my own two feet, unbroken.

A dark, dangerous look of pride flashed across his features.

He closed the distance between us, gently wrapping his fingers around the slide of my weapon, easing it from my trembling fingers, and setting it down on the console behind him. Then, his hands cupped my face, checking every inch of me for fresh wounds.

""Are you hurt?"" he asked, his voice shaking with a raw emotion he couldn't disguise.

""I shot him,"" I whispered, the adrenaline beginning to crash, leaving my limbs trembling.

""You did,"" Dante murmured, kissing my forehead with fierce, desperate tenderness. ""And you did it beautifully.""

He turned back toward Enzo. The warmth on Dante's face vanished instantly, replaced by a cold void that made the temperature in the room drop twenty degrees. He walked over to where Enzo lay groveling on the floor.

""You broke my rule, Enzo,"" Dante said, his voice smooth and terrible. ""You touched a woman who belongs to my household. You had three men beat her in an alley to deliver a message to me.""

""It was business, Moretti!"" Enzo screamed, backing himself against the wall. ""It was just business!""

""No,"" Dante replied, stepping on Enzo's wounded shoulder with the heavy heel of his combat boot, pressing down with calculated, merciless pressure. Enzo shrieked, tears of sheer agony springing to his eyes. ""Business is what we do in boardrooms and freight docks. What you touched was my life.""

""Dante, please—""

""You sent a message, Enzo,"" Dante whispered, drawing his sidearm from his holster and leveling it between the older man's eyes. ""Allow me to send mine.""

The gunshot was deafening inside the enclosed vault.

Silence fell over the room, thick and absolute, broken only by the steady drip of rainwater from Dante's jacket onto the concrete floor. Outside, the sounds of gunfire had completely ceased. The storm continued to roar against the limestone walls above, but the war for Chicago was over.

Dante holstered his weapon, turned around, and walked back to me. Without a word, he pulled me against his chest, burying his face in my hair, holding me so tightly that neither of us could fall.

""It's finished, Harper,"" he whispered against my skin. ""It's all over.""
