Chapter 2 - The Gilded Cage

By noon, the private wing of West End General was completely unrecognizable. The regular hospital staff had been cleared out of the fifth floor under the guise of an urgent HVAC contamination alert, replaced entirely by private medical personnel carrying Dante's corporate payroll badges. Two men in dark suits stood outside my door like stone gargoyles, while a nurse with calm gray eyes and a Glock subtly tucked beneath her clinical scrub top monitored my IV drip.

Every time I closed my eyes, the screech of tires echoed through my skull. I could still smell the wet pavement of the parking garage, the bitter scent of stale menthol tobacco, and the crushing weight of a boot against my spine. My jaw throbbed with a persistent, nauseating rhythm.

Around three o'clock, the door slipped open. I tensed immediately, bracing myself to scream, but it was only Julian, Dante’s younger brother and the nominal chief financial officer of Moretti Enterprises. Julian was the polished face of the family—impeccable smile, bespoke Italian tailoring, and hands that had theoretically never held a weapon.

Yet today, Julian looked disheveled. His tie was slightly crooked, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. He carried a small leather overnight duffel bag and set it gently on the small table near the window.

""You look terrible, Harper,"" he said gently, pulling the guest chair closer.

""Always the charmer, Julian,"" I managed, though speaking felt like chewing broken glass. ""Did Dante send you?""

""Dante didn't send me. Dante is currently turning the South Side inside out like a cheap coat,"" Julian murmured, running a hand through his slicked hair. ""He hasn't spoken ten words since seven this morning, and every single one of those words was an execution order. He told me to pack your essentials from your apartment and bring them here.""

I frowned, alarm pulsing through my veins. ""My apartment? Julian, nobody knows where I live. I took three different train routes every day—""

""They knew,"" Julian cut in, his voice grim. ""When my team arrived at your brownstone in Lincoln Park, the front door was kicked off its hinges. They tore the place apart looking for backups, files, thumb drives. Anything tied to Moretti holdings.""

A cold dread pooled in my stomach. ""Did they find anything?""

""No. Because Dante had a silent security grid installed in your building six months ago. The moment their crowbar touched your door frame, silent alarms triggered, and our clean-up crew intercepted their runner before he made it to the alley."" Julian leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his expression completely serious. ""Harper, you don't realize what's happening, do you?""

""A rival faction is trying to squeeze Dante out of the municipal shipping bids,"" I answered logically. ""The Volkov syndicate has been trying to break into the Midwest terminals for over eighteen months. If they steal our logistics data, they can blackmail the city commissioners.""

Julian gave a sad, humorless chuckle. ""This isn't Volkov. Volkov is terrified of Dante. Volkov sends emissaries and expensive caviar when he wants to negotiate territory.""

""Then who?""

""An old ghost. The Castiglione family. The ones our father drove into the Atlantic fifteen years ago. They’ve reformed under a new head, someone reckless enough to think fear is a myth."" Julian lowered his voice until it was almost swallowed by the hum of the IV monitor. ""They didn't grab you because you're the company secretary, Harper. They grabbed you because everyone on the street knows the one creature in this hemisphere Dante Moretti refuses to let bleed.""

""That's absurd,"" I whispered, turning my face toward the window. ""I work for him. I book his flights.""

""You made him smile at a charity gala last year,"" Julian countered softly. ""Dante hasn't smiled since our mother died in ninety-eight. The underworld watches every breath a king takes. They know who matters, even when the king pretends she doesn't.""

Before I could reply, the door swung open with a resounding bang. Dante walked in, unbuttoning his overcoat. There was a faint smear of dark red along the edge of his crisp white cuff. He didn't look tired. He looked like an apex predator returning from a successful hunt, his eyes landing instantly upon me.

""Julian,"" Dante said without looking at his brother. ""Out.""

Julian didn't hesitate. He stood up, gave my hand a brief squeeze, and slipped out of the room, closing the door softly behind him.

Dante approached the bed, his boots making no sound against the vinyl flooring. He dropped a shattered plastic object onto my bedside table. It was the cracked shell of my laptop's hard drive, burned and warped, but unmistakable.

""They didn't open it,"" Dante said, staring down at me with an intensity that burned hotter than the fever in my bones. ""And the man who broke your jaw will never hold another weapon as long as he lives.""
