Chapter 5 - Secrets in the Shadows

Three days passed in a strange, suspended reality. My bruised eye had begun to fade into shades of yellow and pale lavender, and the sharp, stabbing agony in my ribs had settled into a dull, manageable ache. The private doctor came and went like a phantom, changing dressings, administering pain medication, and murmuring polite reassurances before vanishing down the carpeted corridors.

Living in the Moretti estate was like existing inside a luxury submarine. You knew the crushing pressure of the ocean was outside, waiting to tear through the hull, but inside, everything was silk sheets, silver platters, and hushed voices.

Every evening at seven, Dante appeared. He would sit by the fireplace in my room, a crystal tumbler of scotch resting on the side table, reviewing quarterly revenue reports and shipping manifests while I sat propped up in bed, pretending to read novels Julian had sent up from the library.

We barely spoke during those hours, yet the silence wasn't cold. It was an intimate, charged truce. Occasionally, I would catch him staring at me over the rim of his glass, his expression unreadable, heavy with things left unsaid. For three years, we had danced around this invisible perimeter—he was the untouchable boss, I was the indispensable assistant. But stripped of conference tables and public scrutiny, the boundary was dissolving rapidly.

On the fourth night, I couldn't sleep. The grandfather clock in the hall struck two in the morning. My throat was parched, and the carafe of water on my nightstand was empty. Gritting my teeth against the residual stiffness in my back, I slipped out from under the covers, pulled a thick cashmere robe over my silk pajamas, and crept out into the quiet hallway.

The mansion was cloaked in heavy shadows, illuminated only by recessed floor lights. As I approached the main staircase, I heard low, agitated voices coming from Dante's private study downstairs.

""...he won't agree to those terms, Marco,"" Julian's voice drifted up, tight and strained. ""Enzo has bought off three councilmen. If Dante executes him, the entire zoning board turns against us. We lose the municipal contracts anyway.""

""The boss doesn't care about the zoning board anymore,"" Marco's harsh voice responded. ""Enzo made the mistake of putting hands on the girl. You saw what happened to the two runners we intercepted yesterday. Dante is executing anyone who carries that family crest.""

""He's letting his personal feelings blind his business sense!"" Julian snapped back. ""Harper was supposed to be protected, yes, but burning forty million dollars in city infrastructure over a bruised assistant? Our capos are whispering, Marco. They think Dante has lost his edge to a woman.""

I froze on the landing, my fingers tightening on the polished mahogany handrail until my knuckles turned white. A woman who cost him forty million dollars. The reality struck me like cold rain. Dante wasn't just defending his reputation; he was destabilizing his entire empire because of what had happened to me in that parking garage.

Suddenly, a heavy, familiar voice cut through the argument like a razor through silk.

""Let them whisper,"" Dante spoke. He was standing somewhere near the study doorway, his tone dead, lethal, and absolute. ""And the first capo who questions my judgment to your face, Julian... put a bullet through his forehead and bill his widow for the ammunition.""

""Dante—""

""Harper is not an assistant,"" Dante said, and the conviction in his voice sent a shockwave straight through my spine. ""She is the only clean thing in this cesspool of a city. If I have to burn every dock, every warehouse, and every politician in Illinois to make sure she walks to her car in safety, I will strike the match myself. Are there any other questions regarding the ledger?""

Silence fell over the lower floor.

Terrified of being caught eavesdropping, I turned carefully on my bare feet and slipped back down the dark hallway toward my bedroom. But just as I reached the door, a shadow stepped out from the alcove.

May you like

A strong hand clamped gently around my wrist, pulling me backward into the warmth of a broad, imposing frame.

""Roaming the halls at two in the morning, Miss Ward?"" Dante murmured against the crown of my head. ""That sounds like a direct violation of doctor's orders.""
