Chapter 9 - Scent of Clean Copper

Three weeks later, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was packed with six hundred of Chicago’s most influential figures—judges, politicians, corporate titans, and the reformed lieutenants of the Vale logistics network.

The national syndicate scandal had broken across every newspaper headline. The FBI had executed seventy-four simultaneous arrest warrants from Manhattan to Los Angeles, dismantling the corrupt cartels that had weaponized the poisoned machines. The Vale syndicate, having purged its own rot and leaked the critical intelligence, stood entirely untouchable, transitioning its operations into fully legitimate international freight and shipping.

Adrian Vale stood near the grand stage, dressed in an immaculate bespoke tuxedo. He looked completely restored—strong, commanding, and radiating power. But tonight, he wasn't the center of attention.

On the raised platform in the center of the ballroom stood a brand-new, gleaming marvel of industrial engineering. It was a prototype four-group espresso machine forged from solid, surgical-grade stainless steel and brushed rose gold. No brass. No unlined copper. No toxic alloys. It was fitted with patented digital thermal sensors and hydraulic pressure valves that ensured every drop of water was filtered to laboratory perfection.

Above the stage, a gold-lettered banner read: The Arthur Brooks Legacy Machine – Designed by Brooks Precision.

Emma stood behind the machine, wearing an elegant emerald green evening gown that hugged her curves in all the right places. Her auburn hair was swept up in classic Hollywood waves, her cheeks glowing with natural rose, completely untroubled by the insecurity that had plagued her whole life.

With effortless grace, Emma locked a double-spouted portafilter into the first group head, pulled the polished steel lever, and began extracting a shot of rich, dark espresso.

A dense, hazelnut-colored crema poured like warm honey into a porcelain demitasse. The aroma filled the front rows of the ballroom—rich dark roast, caramelized sugar, vanilla bean, and the crisp, clean scent of pure mountain water.

Adrian walked onto the stage. The entire ballroom silenced its chatter.

He didn't address the crowd. He walked straight up to Emma, looking only at her.

“Is it safe, Miss Brooks?” he asked, a teasing warmth dancing in his deep voice.

“Zero heavy metals, Mr. Vale,” Emma smiled, holding out the tiny cup on a silver saucer. “Forged from pure steel. Guaranteed to keep your heart beating for the next fifty years.”

Adrian took the cup. Without hesitation, he drank the double shot in one smooth swallow, closing his eyes as the rich, complex flavors washed over his palate.

When he opened his eyes, he set the empty cup down, reached into his tuxedo jacket, and pulled out a small velvet box.

The entire ballroom caught its breath.

Adrian dropped to one knee before her.
