Chapter 6 - A Cold Cabin in Wisconsin

The helicopter didn't land at an airfield. It touched down in a secluded clearing deep in the dense pine forests of northern Wisconsin, where a fortified cedar-and-stone compound sat hidden beneath the canopy.

Luca secured the perimeter while an underground combat medic patched Adrian’s shoulder wound. The bullet had passed clean through the deltoid muscle, missing the bone and major arteries, but the loss of blood combined with his lingering thallium weakness left Adrian thoroughly exhausted.

By midnight, the medic had departed, leaving Emma alone with Adrian in the master bedroom of the lodge. A massive stone fireplace crackled with roaring birch logs, casting long, golden shadows across the vaulted timber ceiling.

Adrian lay against the headboard, his bare chest wrapped tightly in white gauze. Emma sat on the edge of the bed, carefully changing the dressing on his forehead where he had struck the helipad tarmac.

“You’re insane,” Emma murmured, gently dabbing antiseptic on his temple. “You took a bullet for a girl who worked in your lobby café for four hours.”

Adrian watched her face, his gaze tracing the soft curve of her jaw, the gentle fullness of her lips, and the fierce intelligence shining in her hazel eyes. “I took a bullet for the only person in this world who looked at me like a human being instead of a monster or a bank account.”

Emma paused, the cotton swab hovering in the air. “Adrian, you killed Frank without blinking. You rule people by fear. You are a dangerous man.”

“I am,” Adrian admitted softly, his uninjured hand reaching up to touch the soft skin of her wrist. “I was born into blood, Emma. My father made sure of it. But when I was dying on that lobby floor, surrounded by marble and millions of dollars, I realized that fear buys compliance, not devotion. When you dropped to your knees and held my head up so the crowd couldn't mock me... you gave me something I’ve never had in my entire life.”

“What?” she whispered, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs.

“Dignity,” Adrian said.

He pulled her gently toward him. Emma didn't resist. She leaned down, her breath mingling with his, and when his lips met hers, the kiss was neither brutal nor domineering. It was desperate, tender, and burning with a quiet, fierce passion that dissolved every fear she had harbored.

Emma kissed him back, her hands tangling in his dark, damp hair, pressing her soft curves against his uninjured side. For the first time in her life, Emma Brooks didn't feel small, overlooked, or inconvenient. In the arms of the most dangerous man in the city, she felt like an empire.

They spent three days in that snow-dusted sanctuary. While Luca coordinated the sweeping purge of Frank Moretti’s remnants back in Chicago, Emma and Adrian lived outside of time. She cooked for him; he taught her how to handle a compact Colt .45. She made him laugh with stories of disastrous South Side espresso repairs; he listened with an intensity that made her feel like the center of the universe.

On the fourth morning, Luca knocked on the heavy oak door.

“It’s done, boss,” Luca reported, stepping inside with a secured satellite tablet. “Frank’s faction has been completely dismantled. The Commission has officially recognized your sole authority over the Midwest territory. But there’s one loose end.”

Adrian buttoned his black wool coat, his cold executive demeanor returning like armor. “What loose end?”

“The leak at the foundry,” Luca said, glancing nervously at Emma. “The people who supplied Peter Danner with the specialized descaling canister. It wasn't an offshore cartel, Adrian. It was Arthur Brooks’s old commercial garage on 31st Street. Someone has been using your father’s old shop as a chemical distribution hub.”

Emma felt the blood drain from her face. “What? That’s impossible! My dad’s shop was locked up by the city after he died!”

Adrian turned to her, his jaw tightening into rigid granite. “Then someone broke the lock, Emma. And we’re going home to see who’s desecrating your father’s name.”
