Chapter 8 - The Severing of the Knot

Dennis stomped down the stone steps, his heavy footsteps thudding against the gravel as he closed the distance. His expensive silk tie was crooked, his face still glowing with residual rage.

""You listen to me, Tyler,"" Dennis snarled, poking a thick, manicured finger toward Tyler’s chest. ""You are married to my daughter as of two hours ago. That means you represent the Vance name now. You get back inside that ballroom right now, you help us handle the catering staff, and tomorrow morning, you and your mother are going to release a written statement to our guests clarifying that this was an administrative misunderstanding regarding a temporary bridge loan! Do you hear me?""

Tyler looked at Dennis’s finger, then slowly lifted his gaze to meet the man's furious eyes. The trembling in Tyler's shoulders had stopped completely. The shame that had weighed him down all evening had crystallized into something cold, hard, and resolute.

""No, Dennis,"" Tyler said, his voice terrifyingly calm. ""I don't represent the Vance name. And as of tonight, I don't think I ever will.""

Lorraine rushed forward, grabbing Brooke’s arm as Brooke began weeping hysterically. ""Tyler, how can you say that? You took vows! You stood before God and promised to love our daughter through thick and thin! You are destroying a marriage over a seating chart!""

""It was never about a seating chart, Lorraine,"" I spoke up, taking one calm step forward from behind Tyler. ""It was about character. It was about honesty. It was about two people who would gladly cannibalize a widow’s life savings just to look rich for four hours in front of people who don't even like them.""

Dennis turned his venom toward me. ""You stay out of this, Evelyn! You think you're so righteous with your little dental hygienist savings? You're a bitter, jealous woman who couldn't stand seeing my family succeed! You tried to destroy me tonight, but my lawyers will have you tied up in court for breach of privacy before the week is out!""

A dry, bitter laugh escaped Tyler’s lips. It was a sound Dennis clearly hadn't anticipated.

""Lawyers, Dennis?"" Tyler scoffed, stepping directly into Dennis’s personal space, forcing the older man to take an involuntary step backward. ""With what money? You haven't paid the maintenance dues on your country club membership in four months. Uncle Bob told everyone inside that your boat is facing repossession. You couldn't afford to retain a lawyer to fight a parking ticket, let alone sue my mother.""

Tyler turned to Brooke. The young woman stood shivering in the autumn wind, her designer dress pooling in the gravel, looking at him with desperate, pleading eyes.

""Brooke,"" Tyler said, his voice dropping into a somber, sorrowful tone. ""I loved you. I really did. I would have lived with you in a tiny, one-bedroom apartment. I would have driven a beat-up truck for ten years just to save for our future. I told you that. But you didn't want a future with me. You wanted a fairy tale paid for by a lie. You knew Dennis had no money. You were the one who begged me to ask my mom for Arthur's insurance check. And then you let your parents treat her like a servant.""

""Tyler, baby, please,"" Brooke sobbed, reaching out with her manicured hand, trying to grasp his fingers. ""My dad promised me things would get better! He said the investment would pay out! I panicked! I just wanted one perfect day where people didn't look at us like we were failing! Please don't leave me here like this!""

Tyler looked down at his left hand. The simple platinum wedding band—which I had also paid for—glinted faintly under the streetlamp.

Without another word, Tyler twisted the ring off his finger. He didn't throw it. He didn't drop it in the dirt. He reached out, took Brooke’s cold, trembling hand, and pressed the heavy platinum circle firmly into her palm, closing her fingers over it.

""Marcus told me the marriage license hasn't been signed by the officiant yet,"" Tyler whispered. ""The paperwork is still sitting on the coordinator’s desk inside. Don't bother submitting it. We're done, Brooke.""
