Chapter 5 - The Confession at the Altar of Truth

Tyler looked at Dennis. Then he looked at Brooke, who was shaking her head vigorously, mouthing the words No, please, don't over and over again, her hands clutching her designer veil as if it were a life raft.
Then Tyler looked back at me. He looked at my worn hands—the hands that had cleaned teeth for three decades to help pay for his college tuition, the hands that had held his father’s as the heart monitor flatlined, the hands that had signed away a life-saving nest egg just so he wouldn't feel the sting of embarrassment in front of high society.
Something inside my son broke. Or perhaps, for the first time in two years, something inside him finally healed.
He stood up so fast his heavy wooden chair tipped backward, crashing onto the hardwood floor with a deafening bang. Brooke shrieked, jumping back in her seat.
Tyler reached out, shoved Kyle’s microphone off the little stand at the center of the head table, and gripped it with both hands. His knuckles were pale, his breath rattling through the sound system.
""No,"" Tyler said into the microphone.
The single word echoed through the ballroom, bouncing off the vaulted ceilings.
""Tyler, sit down!"" Lorraine shrieked, abandoning all decorum, lunging forward to grab his sleeve.
Tyler yanked his arm out of her grasp with such force that she stumbled back into her chair, her wine glass finally shattering across the floor.
""I said NO!"" Tyler roared into the mic, his voice cracking with immense, long-suppressed agony. He turned directly toward Dennis, pointing a shaking finger straight at the older man's nose. ""He didn't pay a single dime! Not one penny! Dennis didn't pay for the flowers! He didn't pay for the string quartet! He didn't pay for this hall, he didn't pay for the food, and he didn't even pay for Brooke's damn dress!""
Gasps rippled across the room like a violent gale. Dennis sat frozen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish pulled onto dry sand.
""Six months ago,"" Tyler shouted, tears finally breaking free and streaming down his flushed cheeks, ""Dennis begged me to find sixty grand because his lake house was under a secondary mortgage and his business accounts were frozen! He told me he was bankrupt! He swore to God he would pay my mother back every single cent if she saved his family from the public shame of canceling this circus!""
Tyler turned toward the stunned crowd, his chest heaving. ""My mother paid for this wedding. Evelyn Hollis. She's a retired dental hygienist who lives off my late dad's pension! She used my father’s life insurance money to write a check for sixty-one thousand dollars so Brooke wouldn't cry, so Dennis wouldn't be embarrassed, and so this day could happen!""
He turned back to Brooke, his voice dropping into a raw, broken whisper that the sensitive microphone still picked up with painful clarity.
""And you... Brooke, you let your mother seat my mom at Table 9. By the trash cans. By the kitchen. Because you said her navy dress 'didn't match the aesthetic' of the bridal party photos. You promised me she’d be honored. You promised me we would thank her.""
Brooke buried her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably.
May you like
""Tyler, please..."" she wailed. ""It was just for the photos! We were going to thank her tomorrow at brunch!""
""There isn't going to be a brunch,"" Tyler whispered into the mic. He lowered the microphone, set it gently onto the head table next to the black binder, and turned his back on his bride, his in-laws, and the two hundred horrified socialites of the Vance family circle.
