Chapter 2 - The Girl from Queens

Mia arrived at the Mancini mansion carrying a faded pink canvas backpack with a broken plastic zipper.

She clung tightly to Arya’s work jacket, her wide hazel eyes darting across the towering crystal chandeliers, marble columns, and armed men stationed by the sweeping entrance.

Six years of living in a cramped fourth-floor walk-up had taught Mia to be quiet around landlords and utility workers.

She did not touch the gilded banisters, nor did she speak above a nervous whisper.

"Mama," Mia whispered, tucking her head into Arya's side. "Is this a castle or a museum?"

"It's a house, sweetie," Arya answered gently, smoothing down Mia’s wild curls. "And for a little while, it's our new job."

From the top of the grand staircase, three identical faces peered down through the carved mahogany balusters.

Leo narrowed his eyes, his arms crossed over his chest, studying the newcomer like a general sizing up an invading army.

Mateo held an unpeeled orange in his right hand, balancing his weight on the balls of his feet as if preparing to launch it.

Enzo merely stared at Mia’s pink backpack, his head tilted sideways with quiet, cautious curiosity.

"She's tiny," Mateo announced from the landing, his clear voice echoing off the high ceiling. "She looks like she cries when she scrapes her knee."

Mia stopped in her tracks.

She pulled away from Arya, planted her red sneakers firmly onto the checkerboard marble floor, and looked straight up at the three boys.

"I don't cry," Mia declared, crossing her small arms to mimic Leo's exact posture. "And your house smells like old cabbage and floor wax."

Upstairs, Mateo's mouth fell open in utter disbelief.

Leo blinked, thoroughly unprepared for a six-year-old girl who fired back before an orange could even be thrown.

In the shadows of the library doorway, Dante stood holding a crystal tumbler of sparkling water, watching the small girl challenge his rebellious heirs.

A faint glint of genuine amusement lit his dark gaze.

"Miss Penelope," Dante said, his voice cutting through the foyer's tense silence. "It appears your daughter possesses your precise lack of survival instincts."

Mia spun around, gasping slightly as she took in the massive man in the dark suit.

She didn't run, though she stepped back until her shoulder touched Arya's thigh.

"Are you the king of this museum?" Mia asked boldly.

Dante looked down at the tiny girl with an expression no one on his security detail had ever witnessed: patient consideration.

He set his glass on an antique side table, slowly crouched down on one knee, bringing his imposing frame down to her eye level.

"I am Dante," he said softly, keeping his voice carefully modulated. "And this is not a museum, Mia. It is your home as long as your mother allows it."

Mia studied his sharp jaw, the silver hairs at his temples, and the faint white scar cutting through his left eyebrow.

She reached out with a small, daring finger, lightly tapping the silver cufflink on his sleeve.

"You look sad, Mr. Dante," Mia whispered innocently. "Just like my mom when the gas gets shut off."

Dante’s entire body went completely still.

Arya held her breath, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs, terrified that her daughter had just stepped over an invisible, fatal line.

For five agonizing seconds, the grand foyer hung in dead silence.

Then Dante slowly stood back up, adjusting the cuff of his jacket.

"Marco," Dante commanded without turning his head. "Have Maria prepare hot cocoa with marshmallows in the small dining room. For four children."
