Chapter 7 - A Trap Set in Velvet

The sight of Evelyn Cross standing on the second-floor landing was like watching a ghost rise from a shallow grave. Vivian staggered backward, her teacup shattering against the polished hardwood floor, sending hot Earl Grey tea and porcelain shards flying across Arthur Sterling’s polished Italian leather shoes.

""Evelyn..."" Vivian whispered, her voice barely audible above the rising wind howling outside the mansion windows. ""You... you signed the release. You agreed never to set foot in this county again.""

""I signed an agreement under duress while my son was being held hostage in your nursery,"" Evelyn said, descending the marble steps with the deliberate, heavy clack of her cane. She stopped three feet from Vivian. Her face bore a faint, faded scar running from her left temple down to her jawline—the permanent souvenir of the fall she had taken down Blackwood Ridge's grand stairs eleven years ago. ""For a decade, I believed your threats. I believed you owned every judge, every trooper, and every prosecutor in this state. But you forgot one thing, Vivian. Money buys silence, but it doesn't buy loyalty when the blood dries.""

""Arthur!"" Vivian screamed, turning frantically toward her lawyer. ""Do something! Clear these people out of my house! Call the Governor! Call the Attorney General!""

Arthur Sterling didn't move. He stood frozen, his eyes darting between the four tactical state troopers fanning out across the gallery and Evelyn Cross. Slowly, deliberately, the attorney closed his leather briefcase and took two long steps backward, separating himself from Vivian.

""Mrs. Vale,"" Sterling said in a hollow, mechanical monotone. ""As of this moment, I am withdrawing as primary counsel for you and the Blackwood Corporation due to an irreconcilable conflict of interest. I advise you to invoke your right to remain silent.""

""You coward!"" Vivian lunged at him, her manicured nails raking across his lapel. ""I made you! I paid for your firm’s partnership! You owe me everything!""

""Ma'am, step back!"" a state trooper barked, lunging forward to restrain her.

Down the hallway, Luke came running out of the nursery, his eyes wild with terror. ""Mom! What's happening? There are dozens of police cars in the driveway! They’re blocking the road!""

He stopped dead when he saw the state troopers, his mother being restrained against the wall, and Evelyn Cross looking directly at him.

""Luke,"" Evelyn said, pity dripping from her voice. ""You were only twenty-three when they made you lie about my fall. You sat on the living room sofa and swore to the detectives that I had taken too many sleeping pills before walking onto the terrace. Did you tell Mara the same lie tonight? Did you tell her she was clumsy too?""

Luke looked at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish suffocating on dry land. His gaze dropped to Oliver, who was resting peacefully in my sling, his tiny chest rising and falling against my ribs.

""Mara..."" Luke choked out, taking a step toward me. ""Please. I didn't know about Clara. I swear to God, I didn't know what Mom did to Clara! I thought she just went away! I only wanted to protect the family name!""

""You didn't protect the family, Luke,"" I said, my voice steady, stripped of all tears, all grief, all love. ""You protected your trust fund. You stood on that porch, looked at your infant son lying on the frozen ground, and told his mother not to embarrass your monster of a mother. You aren't a husband. You aren't a father. You're just Vivian's errand boy.""

""Vivian Vale,"" Investigator Miller announced, her voice booming over the chaos as she pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from her tactical vest. ""You are under arrest for attempted aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, custodial interference, and felony conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent...""

""Get your filthy hands off me!"" Vivian shrieked, thrashing against the cold steel as the cuffs snapped securely around her wrists. ""Lucas, fire them! Lucas, call the press! You will all rot in prison for this! I am Vivian Vale! I run this state!""

As the troopers led Vivian down the grand staircase, her screams echoing off the two-story crystal chandeliers, Troop Commander Vance walked over to me.

May you like

""Mrs. Vale,"" the commander said gently, nodding toward the documents in my hand. ""The state attorney general has just signed an emergency warrant for St. Jude’s Haven in the Adirondacks. Tactical units are already on route to the facility. Within two hours, Clara Vance will be free.""

I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt like releasing years of accumulated poison. Clara was coming home. The long nightmare was finally beginning to unravel.
