Chapter 3 - The Midnight Confrontation

Investigator Miller’s expression did not soften as I recounted the assault, but her eyes darkened into something dangerous and lethal. She photographed my arm from four different angles before the orthopedist arrived to administer local anesthesia and set the bone. Every pull, every sharp agony that shot through my nerve endings, felt like fuel pouring onto a raging fire inside my soul.
When the fiberglass cast was set from my knuckles to just below my elbow, Miller played back the audio recording of Luke’s corridor outburst.
""He claims you have a history of postpartum instability,"" Miller said, snapping her notebook shut. ""Arthur Sterling, their attorney, has already arrived at the hospital lobby. He’s filed an emergency protective custody request with an on-call county magistrate, claiming the child is in imminent danger due to maternal psychosis.""
""Of course he did,"" I said bitterly, adjusting Oliver in the hospital sling the nurses had provided. ""That’s their signature move. Dr. Bennett, show her Clara Vance’s file.""
Miller leaned over the screen, scrolling through the archived reports. Her jaw twitched. ""Clara Vance... I remember this name. Her family reported her missing two years ago from an apartment three states away. The case went cold because she had signed an agreement releasing all ties to the Vale estate in exchange for an offshore trust that had mysteriously ceased disbursements.""
My breath caught. ""Clara is missing?""
""She was never officially classified as a suspicious disappearance because she was an adult who voluntarily relocated,"" Miller explained, her fingers rapidly typing a query into her department-issued tablet. ""Her daughter, Charlotte, was raised entirely by Luke’s late brother until he passed away, and then Vivian took full legal guardianship. Vivian currently holds sole custody of that child.""
A horrifying puzzle clicked into place. Vivian didn't just want control; she collected heirs like rare porcelain, systematically eliminating the mothers who posed a threat to her complete psychological dominion over the family fortune.
""I need to go back to the house,"" I stated firmly, standing up from the gurney. The room spun for a brief second from the pain medication, but I planted my boots firmly on the floor.
""You can't go back there, Mrs. Vale,"" Miller warned, stepping in front of the door. ""Vivian’s residence is a fortress. If you set foot on that property tonight, they will have private security detain you for trespassing or claim you are violent.""
""My passport is in Luke's study,"" I said, meeting her eyes without flinching. ""Along with Oliver’s birth certificate, my mother’s jewelry, and a backup drive containing the financial spreadsheets for Vivian’s charitable foundation. I managed her accounting books for two years before Oliver was born. I know where the shell company accounts are kept. If you want to break Vivian Vale, you don't just charge her with a fourth-degree assault on an icy porch. You cut the financial spine out of her entire empire.""
Miller stared at me for five silent seconds, assessing whether I was acting on adrenaline or calculated vengeance.
""Luke is currently being detained in the holding room downstairs for interfering with an officer,"" Miller said quietly. ""His lawyer is busy attempting to post his bail and secure the magistrate's signature. That gives you approximately forty-five minutes before they return to Blackwood Ridge. If I escort you to retrieve your personal belongings under a civil standby order, they cannot bar the door.""
""Then let's go,"" I said. ""Before the ice melts.""
We exited through the rear ambulance bay to avoid the front lobby, where I could see Arthur Sterling pacing furiously, his expensive wool coat flapping behind him as he shouted into a cell phone.
The drive to Blackwood Ridge took twenty minutes. Sitting in the back of the unmarked cruiser with Oliver sleeping soundly in his car seat beside me, I watched the snow begin to fall again, dusting the dark, winding country roads. The mansion appeared through the skeletal black trees like an ancient, predatory beast.
Every light in the house was still blazing. The catering trucks had vanished, leaving only Vivian’s fleet of black luxury SUVs lined up along the curving drive.

As Miller’s cruiser pulled to a stop at the bottom of the grand stone staircase, the heavy oak doors swung open. Vivian stood on the threshold, wrapped in a floor-length silver cashmere robe, flanked by two towering private security guards in dark suits.
She looked down at the police vehicle, her face carved from cold, unyielding granite, completely devoid of fear.
