Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Vanished

The room was suffocatingly quiet save for Oliver’s soft breathing and the static crackle of Investigator Miller’s encrypted radio.
""Dispatch, this is Unit 404,"" Miller spoke into the mic, her voice like liquid nitrogen. ""I have code-red obstruction of justice and unlawful imprisonment at 44 Blackwood Ridge. Suspects have barricaded a sworn state investigator and a protected witness with an infant inside the residential study. Initiate Operation Timberline immediately. Authorize tactical breach and notify the Attorney General’s duty officer.""
A crisp voice crackled back: ""Copy, 404. Tactical units mobilized. ETA six minutes. Hold your position.""
Six minutes. In a house controlled by a woman who believed laws were mere suggestions for the working class, six minutes was an eternity.
Footsteps heavy and deliberate approached the study door from the exterior hallway. A key scratched against the brass lock, and the deadbolt turned.
The door swung inward.
Standing in the frame was Arthur Sterling, his silver hair immaculate, holding a leather folder and flanked by two burly men wearing civilian windbreakers with badges clipped to their belts. Municipal officers. Men who took their orders from the town mayor who Vivian had personally funded.
Behind them stood Vivian, still wrapped in her silver robe, holding a small silver spoon and a porcelain teacup. She took a delicate sip, looking at me with the serene amusement of an executioner watching an insect wriggle beneath a pin.
""Mara, darling,"" Vivian said smoothly. ""Give Oliver to Arthur. He will take the boy to his nursery, where a qualified pediatrician and a certified nanny are waiting. If you sign the voluntary surrender agreement Arthur has drafted, I will ensure your medical bills are paid, your broken arm is treated by the finest orthopedic surgeons in Manhattan, and you will receive a monthly stipend of ten thousand dollars for the next ten years. You will simply relocate to Vermont and start a lovely new life.""
""And if I refuse?"" I asked, stepping out from behind the heavy mahogany desk, Oliver cradled securely in my left arm. ""Do I get sent to St. Jude’s Haven, Vivian? Like you did to Clara Vance?""
The porcelain teacup froze halfway to Vivian’s lips.
For the first time since I had met her, the absolute, unshakable composure cracked. A violent twitch pulled at the corner of her left eyelid.
""You don't know what you're talking about,"" she spat out, her voice dropping into a harsh, ugly rasp. ""Clara was insane. She was an unfit mother who tried to ruin my family’s reputation.""
""Clara wasn't insane,"" I took a step forward, holding up the bright yellow receipt from the safe. ""You pushed her down the steps just like you pushed me! When she threatened to go to the authorities, you paid off Judge Harrison, had her declared incompetent, and shipped her off to an unlicensed black-site facility so you could play mother to her child!""
Arthur Sterling cleared his throat nervously, glancing at the two municipal officers. ""Mrs. Vale, that documentation is privileged corporate property. Hand it over immediately.""
""She won't be handing over a single scrap of paper, Mr. Sterling,"" Investigator Miller interrupted, stepping directly into the path of the two local cops, her hand resting firmly on the grip of her holstered sidearm. ""Officers, I suggest you take three steps back into that corridor. You are currently assisting in the felony concealment of a kidnapping victim. If you cross this threshold, you will be arrested under federal RICO statutes before dawn.""
The two municipal officers exchanged panicked, uncertain looks. They hadn't signed up for a confrontation with the State Police Major Crimes Task Force.
""Do your job!"" Vivian shrieked, losing control entirely. Her face flushed a mottled, ugly purple. ""I pay your salaries! I built your precinct headquarters! Arrest this woman and take my grandson!""
""Nobody is touching that baby, Vivian,"" a voice called out from the end of the grand hallway.
We all turned.
Standing at the top of the marble stairs, supported by a wooden cane, was an older woman with silver hair cropped short and sharp, wearing a simple wool trench coat. Standing beside her was the State Police Troop Commander, followed by four tactical officers in full tactical gear, their carbines held at the low ready.

The older woman looked straight at Vivian, her eyes burning with an ancient, terrifying fire.
""Hello, Vivian,"" the woman said, her voice shaking with years of buried agony. ""It’s been eleven years. Remember me? Or did you think Evelyn Cross had died in the shadows too?""
