Chapter 4 - Vanessa’s True Colors

By midnight, the grand ballroom of the St. Regis was completely empty, save for the cleaning staff sweeping up broken glass and abandoned party favors. Outside, the rain had begun to pour—a steady, cold October rain that perfectly mirrored the night six years ago when Daniel had evicted his own flesh and blood.

Daniel and Vanessa stood in the penthouse suite above the hotel, their voices screaming so loud that guests two floors down had called the front desk to complain.

""How could you be so stupid?!"" Vanessa screamed, hurling a heavy crystal decanter across the room. It struck a floor-to-ceiling mirror, sending huge spiderweb cracks across the glass. ""You told me you were worth three hundred million dollars! You told me that poor, miserable girl had nothing left to her name!""

Daniel sat on the edge of the plush leather sofa with his head buried in his hands, his tuxedo jacket discarded on the floor. ""I thought the trust expired, Vanessa! My accountants told me her grandmother died without filing the final transfer deeds! I didn't know the Vance firm had kept the umbrella corporation active overseas!""

""You lied to me!"" she shrieked, ripping off her diamond necklace and throwing it at his chest. ""I left a promising career in public relations to build your brand! I gave you two sons! I spent six years playing the devoted billionaire's wife, and now you're telling me we don't even own our house?!""

Daniel looked up, his bloodshot eyes filled with sudden realization. ""Is that all I was to you? A brand? A walking bank account? What about our family, Vanessa? What about standing by me when things get tough, the way you bragged to the press tonight?""

Vanessa let out a cold, venomous laugh that made Daniel’s blood run cold. ""Stand by you? In poverty? Are you insane, Daniel? I didn't marry a scrub who works a nine-to-five! If those trusts are locked, your personal accounts will be seized by tomorrow afternoon! Do you honestly think I’m going to sit in some cramped three-bedroom rental in the suburbs while you file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy?!""

Meanwhile, five miles away in a quiet, warmly lit boutique hotel, Grace was already sound asleep in a king-sized bed, clutching her stuffed rabbit. I sat at a small oak desk near the window, sipping warm chamomile tea while Arthur Vance spread out a series of newly unsealed court documents.

""Everything is moving faster than anticipated, Emily,"" Arthur said, tapping a pen against a blue folder. ""When news hit the Asian markets an hour ago that the Carter Horizon Tower was tied up in fraudulent bond issuance, Daniel’s primary lenders began initiating margin calls. His personal lines of credit have been suspended. By ten o'clock tomorrow morning, his company credit cards won't even buy him a cup of coffee.""

""What about the residential properties?"" I asked, looking out at the city skyline illuminated by thousands of distant lights. ""The mansion in the hills. The one he bought six years ago with the first liquid payout from my grandmother’s fund.""

Arthur pulled out a deed with a cold, triumphant smile. ""The deed was never in his name alone. He structured the purchase through a shell corporation called 'Aura Holdings' to avoid state luxury taxes. But Aura Holdings was funded entirely by the original Vance capital grant. Under the terms of the cross-collateralization agreement, the title reverts entirely to you. You can have them served with an immediate notice of eviction at dawn.""

I looked over at Grace, sleeping peacefully under the heavy blankets. She looked so safe, so completely removed from the filth and greed of the man who had abandoned her. I didn't want revenge out of petty malice. I wanted justice. I wanted to teach Daniel Carter that human lives—especially the life of an innocent child—could not be discarded like trash without consequences.

""Serve the papers at seven in the morning, Arthur,"" I said quietly, setting down my teacup. ""Give them exactly two hours to pack their personal clothes. Nothing else leaves that house. Not a single painting, not a piece of jewelry purchased with trust funds, and not a single car from that garage.""

""Consider it done,"" Arthur replied with a respectful nod. ""Sleep well, Emily. Tomorrow, you take back your life.""
