Chapter 3 - Blood Money And Champagne

The atmosphere in the St. Regis ballroom had turned completely radioactive for Daniel and Vanessa. Investors who had pledged hundreds of millions to Daniel's upcoming waterfront project were already backing away toward the heavy exit doors, whispering frantically into their mobile phones to order immediate freezes on all capital transfers.
""Listen to me, all of you!"" Daniel shouted desperately, waving his arms as he tried to contain the stampede of fleeing billionaires. ""The Carter Horizon Tower is fully solvent! This woman is an extortionist! My legal team will have this injunction thrown out before the market opens on Monday morning!""
""You don't have a legal team anymore, Daniel,"" I said, stepping closer to him until I could smell the stale bourbon and sweat radiating from his pores. ""Your chief corporate counsel, Marcus Brody? He resigned two hours ago. In fact, he was the one who handed Arthur the original executed covenants from your private company vault.""
Daniel’s jaw dropped. Marcus Brody had been his college roommate, his right-hand man, and the architect of his financial network. To know that Marcus had turned against him was the ultimate blow.
""Marcus wouldn't betray me,"" Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with disbelief. ""I made that man rich. I gave him a seat at every major table.""
""Marcus is an ethical attorney who realized you were attempting to sell land you didn't legally own,"" Arthur countered, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. ""Selling municipal development bonds on property owned by a third-party trust constitutes federal securities fraud, Mr. Carter. Marcus chose to cooperate with the Vance Trust rather than face twenty-five years in a federal penitentiary as your co-conspirator.""
Vanessa stood frozen in the middle of the aisle. The bright spotlights seemed to highlight every flaw beneath her heavy foundation. Her eyes darted around the grand room, searching for her wealthy friends—the women she had spent millions entertaining at luxury spas, the country club board members, the socialites who kissed her cheek every Tuesday at charity luncheons. Not a single one of them met her gaze. They were looking at her as if she were a common shoplifter caught red-handed.
""You ruined my anniversary,"" Vanessa hissed, stepping toward me with her hands curled into claws. ""You did this on purpose! You waited six years just to humiliate me in front of the entire world!""
""I didn't think about you for six years, Vanessa,"" I replied, my voice chillingly calm. ""I was busy working two jobs, wiping Grace's tears during her ear infections, and studying commercial real estate law late at night after she fell asleep. You chose to celebrate your tenth anniversary when you’ve only been married to him for six. You built this ridiculous, fraudulent fantasy to rewrite history because deep down, you always knew you stole a man who was never truly yours.""
Grace looked up at Daniel, her big brown eyes filled with confusion. ""Mister, why did you yell at my mommy on TV? The TV said you were a great daddy, but my mommy is the only one who takes care of me.""
Those words hit Daniel like a physical slap across the face. For a brief second, a flicker of genuine, agonizing shame crossed his eyes. He looked down at Grace’s face—a face that carried the exact shape of his eyes and his mother's smile. For six long years, he had convinced himself that abandoning us was a necessary sacrifice for greatness, a clean break to start his glorious new bloodline with Vanessa. But standing here, stripped of his corporate illusion, he was just a pathetic coward who had thrown away gold for painted glass.
""Grace..."" Daniel choked out, taking a clumsy step forward and reaching out a trembling hand toward her hair. ""I... I'm your father. I always wanted to come find you. Your mother hid you from me. She kept you away!""
""Don't you dare touch her,"" I snapped, stepping between them with a ferocity that made him instantly flinch back. ""Do not speak her name with the same mouth you used to order us into the rain. You gave up the right to be a father the second you dropped those two dirty hundred-dollar bills on the floor.""

""Ladies and gentlemen,"" Arthur Vance announced, turning to the remaining guests and the flashing cameras. ""The Vance Trust is exercising its right of immediate repossession. The Carter Horizon Tower development is halted until further notice. All assets, bank holdings, and vehicle fleets registered to Carter International are under a temporary restraining order issued by the State Supreme Court. I suggest you all retrieve your coats. This party is officially over.""
Waiters began clearing the uneaten caviar and chilled champagne flutes as guests practically rushed for the exits, terrified of being caught in the fallout of a federal fraud scandal. The fairy tale was dead. The empire was collapsing. And Daniel Carter was finally going to pay every single cent he owed.
