Chapter 2 - The Document He Buried

The cameras from local business media flashed continuously, blinding the stage with white bursts of light. Daniel’s public relations team scrambled desperately from the back wings, waving their hands frantically at the technicians to shut down the live monitors and turn off the sound system, but Arthur’s legal associates had already stationed themselves at the control booths with certified court orders.

""Turn those cameras off!"" Vanessa shrieked, her voice screeching through the speakers before a sharp buzz finally killed the microphone. She stomped her designer heel on the hardwood floor of the stage, her pristine image of a refined socialite completely evaporating before the eyes of the city’s upper crust. ""You're trespassing, you bitter loser! You got dumped because you weren't good enough to be a billionaire's wife! Get her out of here!""

""Keep talking, Vanessa,"" I said softly, my voice carrying naturally through the stunned crowd. ""Every insult you utter is being recorded, and it will be presented to the probate and commercial courts first thing tomorrow morning.""

Daniel finally found his legs, stepping down from the stage one trembling stair at a time. His eyes were wide with terror, fixed entirely on the thick manila envelope Arthur Vance held in his gloved hands. ""Emily... please. Let's talk about this in a private conference room. There's no need to make a scene in front of our investors and our associates. Think about our daughter. You shouldn't expose her to this.""

I felt a bitter laugh escape my throat. The audacity of this man was boundless. ""Think about our daughter? You want to talk about Grace now, Daniel? Where was that paternal concern six years ago when you pushed us down the porch steps into a torrential downpour? Where was this protective father when Grace was turning blue in an emergency room with severe bronchial pneumonia, and the hospital billing department had to tell me your health insurance had dropped her that very afternoon?""

Murmurs of absolute disgust rippled through the surrounding crowd. Prominent women who had spent the last two hours kissing Vanessa’s cheek turned their heads away, their expressions hardening into utter contempt. In high society, ruthlessness in business was tolerated, but abandoning an infant in the rain to die was an unforgivable stain that no amount of charity donations could wash away.

""I left you two hundred dollars!"" Daniel stammered, his defense only digging his grave deeper. ""I told you to get a motel room! You chose to run away!""

""Two hundred dollars,"" Arthur Vance interjected, stepping directly between Daniel and my daughter. ""Two hundred dollars to the woman who literally funded your first commercial acquisition. Mr. Carter, do you recognize this specific instrument?""

Arthur opened the folder and held up a laminated legal document dated seven years ago. Daniel’s eyes flicked to the signature line, and his knees visibly gave out. He grabbed the back of an upholstered chair to keep from collapsing onto the floor.

""No,"" Daniel whispered, the color draining entirely from his lips. ""That was... that was an internal company draft. It was voided when the corporate restructure was finalized.""

""It was never voided,"" Arthur stated, his voice ringing with cold, professional finality. ""Under Delaware corporate law and the specific covenants of the Vance Family Trust, your personal company, Carter International, accepted an initial capital injection of eighteen million dollars. In exchange, you signed an irrevocable cross-collateralization agreement. It explicitly dictates that in the event of moral turpitude, willful abandonment of marital obligations, or material misrepresentation, all underlying titles, licenses, and ninety percent of your equity revert instantly to the primary trust beneficiary.""

Arthur turned slightly, gesturing toward me and Grace. ""Which happens to be Mrs. Emily Carter and her lawful daughter, Grace Carter.""

Vanessa rushed down the steps, snatching the photocopy directly from Arthur's hands. She scanned the bold legal clauses, her eyes darting frantically over the embossed seals and Daniel’s unmistakable, sloping signature at the very bottom. Her chest heaved with shallow, panicked breaths.

""Daniel... what is this?"" Vanessa’s voice turned into a shrill, hysterical squeak. ""What did you sign?! You told me you owned the whole portfolio! You told me she was a broke waitress with no family! You promised me I was marrying a self-made titan!""

""Shut up, Vanessa!"" Daniel snapped, sweating through his custom silk collar. ""Just shut up and let me think!""

""Don't tell me to shut up!"" she screamed back, tearing the paper in half and tossing the shreds onto the floor. But Arthur simply smiled, reaching into his leather case and producing a neat stack of fifty fresh, certified duplicates.

""Tear as many as you like, Mrs. Carter—or should I say, Ms. Miller, since your marriage certificate will likely be rendered void by morning due to fraudulent financial representations,"" Arthur said smoothly.

Grace squeezed my fingers gently. ""Mommy, that lady is very loud. Can we go get ice cream now?""

I looked down at my beautiful, innocent girl and smiled warmly. ""In just a minute, my sweet girl. Mommy just has to finish collecting what belongs to you.""
