Chapter 4 - The House of Lies

Julian Vance did not call the police. He stood staring at the three crumpled dollars on the counter as if they were made of hot coals. For nearly a minute, the only sound was the low drone of the bakery’s exhaust fan.

Finally, Julian reached up and pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a ragged breath. The intimidating titan of industry seemed to crumble slightly at the edges, revealing an exhausted, desperate father underneath.

""Her nanny,"" Julian muttered, speaking more to himself than to Emma. ""Mrs. Dupont.""

Emma frowned. ""Who?""

Julian looked up, the arrogance completely gone from his face. ""I hired a private governess six months ago. Top credentials from Boston. She was paid fourteen thousand dollars a month to manage Lily's homeschooling, nutrition, and schedule while I oversaw the merger downtown. I was told Lily had a chef-prepared organic breakfast, private tutoring, and a scheduled birthday dinner at the club last night.""

Emma crossed her arms, her protective instincts instantly flaring. ""Well, your fourteen-thousand-dollar nanny wasn't home. Lily told me an elderly woman named Mrs. Jenkins downstairs was the only person who even knew she left the apartment.""

Julian's phone buzzed violently in his pocket. He ignored it. His hands clenched into fists at his sides.

""I worked forty-eight hours straight,"" Julian whispered, his voice thick with guilt. ""A critical acquisition in Chicago. I thought... I convinced myself that by securing this deal, I was securing Lily’s entire future. Her mother died of leukemia two years ago, Miss Carter. Before Clara passed, I promised her I would give Lily the world. I thought giving her the world meant building an impenetrable financial fortress around her.""

He looked around the modest little bakery—the hand-painted signs, the warm light, the glass jars filled with flour and sugar, the sweet, comforting smell of real food made with care. It was the complete opposite of his sterile, cold penthouse.

""When I finally arrived home at midnight,"" Julian said, looking back at Emma, ""I found Lily asleep in her bed. She had left half the strawberry cake on my desk, covered in plastic wrap, with a note written in purple crayon. It said: 'Daddy, I saved you the best part. Happy birthday to us.'""

Emma felt a lump rise in her throat. She looked down at her apron, remembering the little girl’s wide, hopeful eyes.

""She didn't eat the dinner from the club,"" Julian continued, his voice cracking slightly. ""Because there was no dinner. When I checked the penthouse surveillance logs this morning after seeing the bakery box... I found out the governess left at two o'clock yesterday afternoon to go to a spa in Philadelphia. She left my seven-year-old child completely alone in an eighty-story tower with locked pantry cabinets and an empty refrigerator.""

Julian closed his eyes, a shudder running through his massive frame. ""Lily found those coins in my laundry hamper. She walked four blocks in the freezing rain because she thought it was her fault I was working so hard. She wanted to bring me something sweet so I wouldn't be sad.""

Emma’s anger melted away, replaced by an overwhelming ache for both the child and the broken man standing before her.

""Children don't want an empire, Mr. Vance,"" Emma said softly. ""They just want their dad. And maybe a slice of cake.""

Julian looked at her, his eyes dark with unshed tears. ""I fired the nanny forty minutes ago. Her bags are on the sidewalk. But I... I don't know how to fix this, Miss Carter. I don't know how to be what she needs.""

Before Emma could answer, the front door violently rattled open, and a man in an expensive navy suit burst inside, clutching a leather briefcase.
