Chapter 6 - The Midnight Board

The explosion deep in the geothermal bedrock shook the entire luxury lodge to its core. Chandeliers in the main lobby swayed violently, and a shower of fine plaster dust cascaded from the vaulted timber ceilings. On the top floor, inside the opulent executive boardroom, Adrien Vale didn't even flinch. He merely adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke French shirt, checked his platinum Patek Philippe watch, and smiled thinly at Celia Voss.
The antique grandfather clock in the corner chimed twelve resonant, solemn notes. Midnight had arrived.
"The demolition was successful," Vale said smoothly, glancing down at a notification on his encrypted tablet confirming the total structural collapse of the lower western utility tunnel. "A tragic accident. The unstable seismic conditions in the pass triggered a catastrophic methane leak in the old boiler system. Dorian Voss, his criminal secretary, and Marcus have all been consumed by the blast. It is a terrible, heartbreaking tragedy for the entire Voss dynasty."
Celia Voss dabbed at the corner of her dry eyes with a silk handkerchief, though her lips were curled into a predatory grin. "Terrible indeed, Adrien. Such a pity about my foolish brother Marcus, but he was always an unreliable pawn. The family trust is now consolidated entirely in my name. Are the remaining board members online?"
Vale tapped a command on the conference room's primary holographic display. Instantly, nine video feeds materialized around the oval mahogany table, displaying the groggy, anxious faces of Voss Meridian’s senior global directors, dialed in from London, Tokyo, Zurich, and New York.
"Fellow members of the board," Vale began, his voice projecting gravitas and manufactured grief. "I regret summoning you under such horrific circumstances. As you have seen from the verified media packages transmitted thirty minutes ago, Dorian Voss suffered a complete psychotic break this evening, executing six neutral arbiters in an attempt to subvert the restructuring agreement. When cornered by local security, he and his co-conspirator, Odette Landry, detonated the lower facility."
Murmurs of shock, horror, and outrage rippled across the digital screens.
"Under Section 12 of our continuity charter," Celia spoke up, leaning into the high-definition camera with practiced solemnity, "I am calling for an immediate vote of emergency succession. With Dorian deceased and my brother missing, I move to assume the role of Interim Chief Executive Officer and authorize the immediate private sale of the Arctic Quantum Initiative to ensure corporate solvency."
"I second the motion," Vale declared immediately. "All in favor, cast your digital cryptographic tokens now."
On the central screen, the voting tally began to populate: Three votes yes... Five votes yes... Seven votes yes...
"Stop the vote!"
The heavy oak double doors of the boardroom were violently kicked off their heavy brass latches, slamming against the walls with the force of a thunderclap.
The nine directors on the video feeds gasped in collective shock. Celia rose from her leather chair, her face draining of all color, her silk handkerchief slipping from her trembling fingers.
Standing in the doorway, framed by the drifting smoke of the corridor, was Dorian Voss.
He was covered in gray soot, his jacket torn, his knuckles bruised and bloody, but his eyes carried the lethal, commanding authority of an emperor who had returned from the dead. At his side, holding Marcus’s confiscated 9mm pistol in a steady, two-handed tactical grip, was Odette Landry. Her gaze was fierce, unyielding, and utterly devoid of fear.
Between them, shoved forward onto his knees onto the plush Persian rug, was Marcus Voss. His arm hung limp from his dislocated shoulder, his tactical suit scorched, sobbing like a broken child.
"Dorian?!" Celia shrieked, backing away toward the panoramic window. "You... you were incinerated!"
"Reports of my death were somewhat premature, Celia," Dorian said, his voice ringing through the boardroom with devastating clarity. He walked slowly toward the table, every step deliberate, exuding an aura of absolute dominance.
Adrien Vale’s smooth mask of composure shattered. Panic flashed across his sharp features. His hand darted toward the inside pocket of his suit jacket.

Odette instantly raised the pistol, aiming the laser sight squarely between Vale's eyes. "Take your hand out of your jacket, Adrien. Empty. Slowly. Or I promise you, I won't miss."
Vale froze. Slowly, his fingers trembling with suppressed rage, he withdrew his empty hand and raised both arms in surrender.
"Members of the board, do not disconnect this call," Dorian commanded, turning his icy gaze toward the nine floating video monitors. "You are witnessing the final moments of a treasonous conspiracy against this company and the United States government."
"Don't listen to him!" Celia screamed desperately at the screens. "He’s a murderer! He killed the arbiters! We have Odette Landry’s confession on video!"
"You have a twenty-million-dollar deepfake created by Adrien Vale," Odette countered with razor-sharp authority, stepping forward and placing her smartphone flat on the center of the mahogany table. "And right now, this phone is broadcasting the unedited, raw audio recorded in that conference room twenty minutes before the shooting."
Odette tapped the screen.
The voice of Adrien Vale filled the boardroom, clear, unmistakable, and terrifyingly cold:
*"Sign the release, or you won't live to see the midnight sun... Clean the room."*
The silence across the international video feeds was absolute. The directors stared in utter revulsion at Vale.
"Marcus," Dorian barked, looking down at his shattered cousin on the floor. "Tell the board who hired the tactical operatives. Tell them who promised you three billion dollars. Speak, or I will hand you over to the federal authorities as the sole surviving shooter."
Marcus broke down, weeping hysterically. "It was Vale! It was all Vale! He supplied the weapons, he gave us the executive access cards, he set up the offshore Cayman entity, and he tried to blow me up in the basement! He promised Celia and me fifty percent of the quantum sale!"

"You sniveling little coward!" Vale snarled, his voice dropping into a rabid fury.
Realizing the game was entirely lost, Vale made a desperate, feral gamble. He violently shoved the heavy mahogany table toward Dorian and lunged forward, his hands reaching to snatch Odette’s pistol!
