Chapter 5 - Marcus's Betrayal

The heavy mist swirled around Marcus Voss’s tailored boots as he took slow, deliberate steps along the iron grating. The cold steel of the silenced pistol caught the amber glare of the emergency lights. Behind him, the shadows revealed another armed operative, dressed in dark tactical gear, holding a carbine at the low-ready.

"Marcus," Dorian said, his voice deadly calm, masking the raw fury pulsing through his veins. "I should have known you'd handle the dirty work yourself. You never had the stomach to win in the boardroom."

Marcus let out a sharp, mocking laugh that bounced off the sweating cavern walls. "The boardroom is a playground for old men with obsolete morals, Dorian. You and Uncle Thomas spent your lives pretending Voss Meridian was some kind of benevolent empire. Do you have any idea how much money the private consortium offered us for the Quantum navigation keys? Three. Billion. Dollars."

"Blood money," Odette spoke up from behind Dorian, her voice ringing with defiance. "You murdered six innocent men. You executed them in cold blood just to line your offshore accounts!"

Marcus shifted his cold, arrogant gaze toward her, a sneer curling his lips. "Ah, the brilliant, dutiful Miss Landry. You always were too smart for your own good. If you had just stayed home in New York, we would have found another scapegoat. But you insisted on coming to Alaska to oversee the compliance filings. And now, you’ve made yourself the perfect patsy."

"You won't get away with this, Marcus," Dorian said, taking a subtle, calculated half-step forward, cutting off Marcus’s line of sight to Odette. "The storm won't last forever. Federal marshals will be here by dawn."

"By dawn, Dorian, the story will be fully written and certified by the world’s media," Marcus retorted smugly. "A tragic workplace massacre. The stressed, reclusive CEO Dorian Voss snaps under pressure, executes the federal arbiters with the help of his compliant personal secretary, and then, in a desperate fit of remorse, both of you perish in a catastrophic boiler explosion deep beneath the facility."

Marcus gestured toward the far end of the chamber with the barrel of his gun. For the first time, Odette noticed the blinking red lights attached to three massive industrial propane tanks feeding the geothermal boilers. Commercial C4 charges were strapped to the valves.

"A simple spark," Marcus smiled chillingly. "The entire western wing will collapse into the gorge. The bodies will be burned beyond recognition, the servers will be incinerated, and the cloud deepfake will stand as the only historical record. Celia and Vale are already initiating the board vote upstairs. By midnight, I become the Chairman."

"You forgot one detail, Marcus," Odette said, stepping out slightly from behind Dorian, her chin held high despite the weapon pointed at her.

"And what is that, sweetheart?" Marcus sneered.

"Adrien Vale doesn't share," Odette stated plainly, her voice steady and razor-sharp. "You think you're the mastermind here, but you're just another piece on Vale's board. Who do you think configured the network wipe upstairs? Vale. Who controls the Cayman holding company that receives the three billion dollars? Vale. Do you really believe that once Dorian and I are dead, Vale will let a reckless, arrogant liability like you walk away with half the fortune?"

Marcus’s smirk twitched. A shadow of doubt flickered across his eyes for a fraction of a second. "Nice try, Landry. You’re trying to sow discord. Vale works for our family trust."

"Vale works for Vale," Dorian pressed the advantage, recognizing the brilliant wedge Odette had driven into his cousin's psyche. "Check your encrypted messaging app, Marcus. Has Vale answered your last three pings? Has he confirmed the secondary transfer to your Swiss account? Or did he tell you to stay down here until the demolition is complete?"

Marcus’s left eye twitched nervously. He reached into his tactical vest with his free hand, pulling out his secure satellite phone. The screen showed three unread outgoing messages, completely unanswered. At the same time, the digital timer on the explosive charges suddenly beeped loudly, jumping from its ten-minute countdown down to an immediate three-minute sequence!

"What the hell?!" Marcus gasped, staring at the blinking C4 detonator. "The timer just cut in half!"

"Vale just locked the remote override," Odette shouted. "He’s blowing the chamber with you inside it!"

"That traitorous bastard!" Marcus roared, his discipline shattering into pure panic.

In that singular moment of absolute distraction, Dorian struck.

With the explosive power of a seasoned athlete, Dorian lunged across the four-foot gap between them. His left hand clamped onto Marcus’s gun wrist, forcing the weapon upward just as Marcus pulled the trigger!

*Phut! Phut!*

Two silenced rounds punched harmlessly into the concrete ceiling, dislodging chunks of stone and a cloud of white plaster dust. Dorian drove his shoulder hard into Marcus’s chest, slamming him violently against the iron railing.

The tactical operative behind Marcus raised his carbine to fire at Dorian, but Odette didn't hesitate. Grabbing a heavy, rusted three-foot iron spanner from a maintenance cart, she swung it with every ounce of strength in her body, striking the mercenary directly across the side of his tactical helmet!

The blow knocked the operative off-balance. He stumbled sideways, his boots tangling in a nest of loose cables, and plummeted over the catwalk railing with a strangled yell, landing twenty feet below on the stone floor of the hydro-drainage trench.

Meanwhile, Dorian wrestled the pistol from Marcus’s grip, twisting his cousin’s arm behind his back until the bone popped with a sickening crunch. Marcus screamed in agony, dropping to his knees on the steel grate.

Dorian stripped the weapon, ejected the magazine to check the rounds, slapped it back in, and pressed the cold muzzle against Marcus’s temple.

"Give me the disarm code for the C4, Marcus," Dorian hissed, his voice cold enough to rival the polar winter outside. "Right now. Or I let you experience the explosion you planned for us."

"I don't have it!" Marcus wailed, clutching his dislocated shoulder, tears of pain mixing with cold sweat. "Vale holds the master disarm cipher! It’s on his personal tablet upstairs in the executive suite!"

"Two minutes and ten seconds," Odette warned, staring at the flashing red LED display on the bomb. "Dorian, we have to run! The eastern emergency ladder leads up to the kitchen service elevator!"

Dorian grabbed Marcus by the collar of his tactical vest, hauling him to his feet like a rag doll. "You're coming with us, cousin. You’re going to be our star witness."

They sprinted along the shuddering catwalk, the roar of the geothermal steam intensifying as the pressure valves began to strain under the sabotage protocol. Behind them, the red numbers on the C4 flashed down into single-digit seconds: 00:45... 00:30... 00:15...

Dorian shoved Odette up the narrow iron ladder of the vertical service shaft, pushed Marcus up behind her, and climbed immediately beneath them.

They reached the upper metal trapdoor just as the countdown hit zero.

A subterranean shockwave ripped through the foundation of the hotel. A deafening roar of fire and expanding gas tore through the tunnel below, sending a massive geyser of superheated steam and concussive air blasting up the shaft. Dorian reached up, throwing his entire weight against the iron trapdoor, sealing it shut with the heavy mechanical latch just as the fire swept beneath their boots, rattling the steel with apocalyptic fury.
