Chapter 3 - Footsteps in the Vent

The screech of the security klaxon vibrated through the steel floorboards of the bunker. Mara Keen racked the slide of her shotgun with a brutal, practiced snap. The fluorescent lights overhead flickered twice, then plunged the room into a sickly amber glow as the auxiliary generator kicked in.

"The building's main power grid just got cut from the sub-level," Mara stated, checking the manual dials on the emergency console. "Whoever is down there knows the layout of this lodge better than the architects. They've isolated the surveillance wing."

Dorian immediately moved to the heavy reinforced door, sliding the manual steel deadbolts into place. "Mara, how many armed men did you have on duty tonight?"

"Six," Mara replied grimly. "Two stationed at the entrance, two guarding the shelter on the ground floor with the guests, and two patrolling the corridors. But when I tried reaching my patrol team over the radio three minutes ago, all I got was static. Someone deployed a tactical frequency jammer across the lodge."

Odette stood beside the central desk, wrapping Dorian’s oversized coat tighter around her slender frame. The faint scent of his cologne gave her an inexplicable sense of safety, even as terror gnawed at her insides. "If Vale sent mercenaries, they aren't here just to eliminate us. They need the physical hard drive from the local safety network. Remember what you told me about the backup system, Mara?"

Mara nodded, pointing toward a heavy, fireproof vault door set into the concrete wall behind the monitor bank. "The secondary system. An isolated analog recorder that writes directly to magnetic tape. It was installed after last winter's elevator accident. It doesn't connect to the internet, it doesn't touch the corporate cloud, and it cannot be altered by deepfake software. Whatever happened in that conference room at 9:11 p.m., the unvarnished truth is sitting on that spool."

"Then that's their target," Dorian said grimly.

Suddenly, a dull, metallic clang echoed from the ceiling.

Odette froze, her eyes darting upward. The air-conditioning ducts—massive, galvanized steel channels running between the subterranean levels—reverberated with the unmistakable sound of shifting weight. Something—or someone—was crawling through the ventilation shaft directly above their heads.

"Up there," Odette whispered, pointing a trembling finger at the large ventilation grate above the server racks.

Mara raised her shotgun, aiming square at the grate. "Come down out of there, or I'll blow you into scrap metal!"

The crawling sound abruptly stopped. A heartbeat of absolute, suffocating silence gripped the room.

Then, with blinding speed, a small metallic cylinder rolled out through the slats of the air grate, dropping onto the linoleum floor with a hollow bounce. A hiss of pressurized gas erupted, filling the room with dense, choking white smoke.

"Tear gas! Cover your faces!" Dorian roared.

He lunged forward, grabbing Odette by the waist and pulling her down beneath the heavy oak work table just as the grate was violently kicked outward. The steel mesh crashed onto the floor, and two figures in black winter tactical gear dropped into the room like lethal shadows.

Through the stinging fog, Odette saw the flash of the first intruder's arm. Wrapped tightly around his left glove was unmistakable: white electrical tape.

"Secure the drive! Kill the witnesses!" a harsh, distorted voice barked through a respirator.

*Boom!*

Mara’s shotgun tore through the smog, the blast deafening within the confined bunker. The buckshot caught the second intruder in the shoulder, throwing him violently backward against the wall-mounted server rack. Sparks rained down like fireworks as high-voltage wires snapped.

The first intruder fired back with a silenced submachine gun, three sharp rounds thudding into the concrete wall an inch above Mara’s head, forcing her to dive behind a metal locker for cover.

Under the desk, Odette’s breath came in ragged, wheezing gasps as the tear gas burned her eyes and throat. Dorian shielded her body completely with his own, his arms locked around her back, taking the brunt of any ricocheting debris. In that terrifying second, with life and death hanging by a thread, she felt the frantic, thumping rhythm of his heart against her cheek. This was the man the corporate media called a cold, unfeeling sociopath—yet he was using his own flesh and blood to protect his secretary.

"Odette," he whispered urgently, his lips inches from her ear, his breath warm against her cold skin. "Do you still have the silver card?"

She fumbled in her pocket, her fingers brushing the metallic edges. "Yes."

"The maintenance hatch beneath this desk," Dorian whispered, his eyes locked onto hers with fierce intensity. "It leads to the old geothermal boiler room under the basement. Use the card on the electronic bypass box beside the hatch. I’m going to distract him. You crawl through, do not look back, and head toward the western wing."

"No!" Odette gripped his lapels, her voice desperate. "I'm not leaving you here! If you stay, they will murder you and claim you died resisting arrest!"

"I won't let them destroy you, Odette," Dorian said, his gaze softening for a single, breathtaking second. "You've spent three years cleaning up my mistakes and standing between me and the sharks. Let me protect you for once."

"We go together," she hissed fiercely, her stubbornness flaring even in the face of death. "Or neither of us goes."

Before Dorian could argue, the intruder with the white-taped wrist advanced toward the desk, his boots crunching on broken glass. Mara was pinned down, reloading her shotgun behind the lockers.

The intruder aimed his weapon down at the gap beneath the table.

In a split-second reaction, Odette reached out and grabbed an exposed, sparking electrical cable severed by Mara’s blast. Using the insulated rubber sleeve of Dorian’s coat to protect her hand, she jammed the live high-voltage copper wire directly into the pool of spilled water beneath the intruder’s tactical boots!

A blinding blue arc flashed through the room. A monstrous electric surge traveled up the mercenary’s body. He shrieked in agony through his mask, his muscles seizing violently as five hundred volts threw him into the air, causing him to crash heavily onto his back, unconscious and convulsing on the floor.

"Move! Now!" Dorian shouted, astounded by her quick thinking.

He kicked the maintenance hatch open, revealing a dark, vertical shaft with a ladder disappearing into the subterranean shadows below. Dorian took Odette’s hand, guiding her down first, then dropped into the darkness right after her, slamming the heavy iron hatch shut from below just as another hail of gunfire peppered the ceiling of the bunker.
