Chapter 4 - The Carlyle Connection

Celeste sprang to her feet, knocking her designer purse to the floor, her face twisted in wild desperation.
"You don't understand, Dominic!" she screamed, backing away toward the heavy velvet curtains. "Julian has people everywhere! He told me if I didn't help him swap the wine and deliver the signed Florentine annex, he would release the accounting records from the Milan branch! He was going to destroy our family name!"
"You sold my life to save your social standing on Park Avenue," Dominic said, rising slowly from the table like a predator uncoiling. "You let a common assassin slip cyanide into my glass so you could keep attending charity galas."
"Dominic, please!" she begged, bursting into hysterical tears as two security guards took her firmly by the elbows. "We're family! Eleanor would never forgive you for putting me in prison!"
"Eleanor was my mother, Celeste, and she had no tolerance for traitors," Dominic answered coldly. "Take her to the lower holding room. Strip her of all electronic devices and hand her over to District Attorney Barnes with the cloned transcripts."
As the guards dragged the weeping woman through the service corridor, Dominic turned back to Chen.
"How many men does Moretti have at the Carlyle?"
"Three private contractors, according to the building's exterior surveillance logs," Chen reported briskly. "All armed, all former private military operators. They have a chartered helicopter on standby at the 34th Street heliport scheduled for departure at 1:15 a.m."
Dominic checked his platinum wristwatch; it was 11:42 p.m.
"He's expecting a confirmation message from Celeste's encrypted phone," Dominic reasoned, tapping the table rhythmically with his index finger. "If he doesn't get it within twenty minutes, he'll scrub the suite and vanish into the international wind again."
He looked at me, his sharp gaze assessing, weighing every possibility in a split second.
"Mara, did your father ever teach you Moretti’s personal telegraphic cipher?" Dominic asked suddenly. "The old bookkeeping codes he used when communicating with the Florence vault?"
My mind raced back to the dusty stacks of accounting ledger notebooks stored in my mother's attic—hundreds of pages filled with Julian Moretti’s handwritten marginalia, numeric sequences, and linguistic substitutions that my father had spent months trying to crack before his stroke.
"Yes," I said, my voice steady despite the adrenaline roaring through my veins. "He called it the Medici Cipher. It’s an alphanumeric substitution based on early Italian mercantile dialect. My father cracked eighty percent of it before he died."
"Could you draft a convincing confirmation message from Celeste's account?" Dominic pressed, stepping closer to me. "Something that would convince Moretti that the document is signed and the wine was consumed, without triggering his security protocols?"
I looked at the forged Italian document on the table, then at the photograph of Julian Moretti displayed on Chen's tablet—the man whose corporate greed had killed my father and reduced my family to poverty.
"Give me the phone," I said, stepping up to the table.
Chen handed me the terminal, and my fingers flew across the keyboard, typing the archaic dialect phrase my father had underlined in red three years ago:
Il calice è vuoto. L'atto è sigillato. Porta l'archivio al molo.
"The chalice is empty. The deed is sealed. Bring the archive to the dock," I whispered aloud, translating the coded message.
Three agonizing dots pulsed on the screen for forty seconds.
Then a single reply flashed back:
Incontro al molo 42. Mezzanotte.
"He took the bait," Chen breathed, looking at Dominic with wide eyes. "He thinks you're dead, and he's bringing the original financial archives to Pier 42 to board his offshore yacht."
May you like
Dominic reached into his overcoat, pulled out a heavy gold-embossed pen, and placed it gently in my palm.
"Miss Bennett," Dominic said, a fierce, protective resolve burning in his dark eyes. "How would you like to watch the man who destroyed your father get put in chains?"
