Chapter 3 - Bloodline and Betrayal

Within fifteen minutes, Le Triomphe had been completely transformed into a fortress.

The restaurant's street exits were locked down by Dominic's private security team, while six unmarked black Suburbans idle on East 65th Street, blocking the alleyways.

My manager, Mr. Laurent, was weeping softly in the pantry, terrified that the restaurant’s three-Michelin-star rating was ruined forever.

Dominic sat across from me in the center of the dining room, having ordered his guards to clear out the waitstaff and confine the corporate lawyers to the wine cellar under armed guard.

Only Celeste remained, sitting stiffly on an velvet settee in the corner, nervously typing messages on her sapphire-cased smartphone until Dominic held out an open palm.

"Give me the phone, Celeste," he said without looking up from the Italian document.

"Dominic, this is private property! You have no right to confiscate—"

"The phone, Celeste. Now."

His voice didn't rise, but the absolute authority behind it caused her to freeze. She placed the phone into his hand with trembling fingers.

Dominic tossed the device to his lead investigator, a sharp-featured woman named Chen who had just arrived with a digital forensics kit.

"Clone the memory, mirror the encrypted messaging logs, and pull every offshore wire transfer initiated in the last ninety days," Dominic instructed.

He turned his full attention back to me, studying my face with an intensity that made my skin prickle.

"You speak fluent Tuscan Italian, you understand complex international trust law, and you can spot fine-bore syringe marks on antique lead foils," Dominic said, folding his hands on the table. "Why are you carrying bread baskets for sixty dollars a shift, Miss Bennett?"

I looked down at my worn black service shoes, feeling a sudden surge of heat rise to my collar.

"Two years ago, my father was a junior partner at Moretti Capital," I confessed quietly, the truth bitter on my tongue. "When Julian Moretti looted the fund and skipped the country, he pinned eighty percent of the missing liability on three low-level portfolio managers. My father was one of them."

Dominic's eyes narrowed slightly, a glimmer of recognition sparking in his dark pupils. "David Bennett."

"Yes," I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. "The legal fees drained our house, our savings, and my graduate school tuition. My father suffered a massive stroke three days before his federal indictment was scheduled. He died with eighty thousand dollars of legal debt pinned to his name."

The dining room went completely silent except for the faint ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner.

"So I took two jobs," I continued, looking directly into the billionaire's eyes. "I wait tables here five nights a week, and I work overnight translation gigs for commercial shipping companies down at the docks. I didn't come to Le Triomphe to be a hero, Mr. Rinaldi. I came here to pay my mother's rent and keep my brother in college."

Dominic stared at me for a long moment, something unreadable softening the harsh lines around his mouth.

"Your father was framed, Mara," Dominic said quietly.

My heart stopped. "What?"

"David Bennett was an honest auditor," Dominic explained, his voice low and deliberate. "He was the first person who flagged Julian Moretti’s shadow accounts in the Cayman Islands. I was trying to reach him with an offer of legal protection when he passed away."

Before I could process the shock of his words, Chen walked briskly back into the room, holding Celeste's cloned phone screen toward Dominic.

"Mr. Rinaldi, you need to see this," Chen said urgently. "We broke the secondary encryption layer on the Signal messenger."

Dominic took the tablet, his eyes scanning the decrypted text exchanges.

A humorless, terrifying smile spread slowly across his lips as he looked up toward the velvet settee where Celeste was sitting.

"Fascinating," Dominic whispered. "It turns out my dear sister-in-law wasn't just nervous about bad publicity tonight. She was nervous because Julian Moretti is currently sitting in a private suite at the Carlyle Hotel, waiting for a text confirming my heart had stopped beating."
