Chapter 9 - The Harbor Gala

Three months passed. Winter blanketed Staten Island in a pristine, glittering layer of snow.

The transition of Caruso Enterprises had sent shockwaves through New York high society and Wall Street. Victor’s sudden, quiet ""relocation"" to an offshore agricultural outpost in Argentina had been quietly accepted by the family board, especially after Frank Moretti and Anthony’s veteran crew made it crystal clear that anyone questioning the new leadership would answer to them directly.

Tonight, the grand ballroom of the Manhattan Harbor Hotel was ablaze with chandeliers and champagne. It was the annual Winter Charity Gala, an elite gathering of New York’s old money, shipping titans, and political heavyweights.

All eyes turned toward the grand double staircase as the master of ceremonies announced the arrival of the evening’s guest of honor.

""Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Anthony Caruso, accompanied by Miss Maria Bennett.""

A collective murmur of awe swept through the ballroom.

Anthony looked magnificent. The bruises and gauntness of his captivity were entirely gone, replaced by a radiant, commanding vitality. He wore a midnight-blue bespoke tuxedo that broadened his powerful shoulders, his dark hair neatly styled.

Beside him, Maria Bennett took the breath away from every man in the room. Gone was the humble housekeeper in her faded cotton aprons. She wore an off-the-shoulder gown of deep sapphire velvet that hugged her graceful figure, her dark hair swept up in an intricate chignon adorned with subtle diamond pins. She walked with a natural, quiet elegance that outshone every Manhattan heiress in attendance.

Anthony held her arm securely against his side, his touch protective and proud. Whenever she looked up at him with a shy, nervous smile, his stern features softened into pure adoration.

""Are you doing alright?"" Anthony whispered, leaning close so only she could hear over the swelling orchestra music. ""You look like an empress, Maria.""

""I’m terrified,"" Maria whispered back, her cheeks flushing a delicate pink. ""Everyone is staring at us. They know I was your maid three months ago.""

""Let them stare,"" Anthony murmured, his dark eyes flashing with fierce pride. ""They're staring because you have more grace in your shadow than all of these blue-bloods combined. And because they know you own the man who owns the harbor.""

Across the ballroom, several older society matrons and corporate rivals watched with thinly veiled jealousy, but no one dared utter a disparaging word. Anthony’s complete ruthlessness in eliminating corruption from his ranks over the past ninety days had cemented his reputation as an untouchable kingpin who had successfully modernized an empire.

Halfway through the evening, after the corporate speeches and charity auctions were concluded, Samuel arrived at the side entrance of the ballroom, holding a small hand in his.

Daisy stepped into the grand hall wearing a fluffy white princess dress with shiny patent leather shoes. Tucked firmly beneath her arm, as always, was Biscuit, whose torn ear had been carefully sewn shut with golden silk thread by Maria.

The crowd parted automatically as the little girl marched across the polished marble floor. She didn't care about the billionaires, the politicians, or the diamond necklaces. She had a mission.

She walked straight up to Anthony and Maria on the center stage, pulling a brand-new, miniature leather-bound portfolio from her tiny velvet purse.

""Mister Anthony,"" Daisy announced, her clear, ringing voice carrying across the silent ballroom. ""You forgot your bedtime signature.""

A ripple of amused laughter rippled through the high-society crowd.

Anthony didn't care about decorum. Without a second of hesitation, the most powerful shipping magnate on the Eastern Seaboard dropped to both knees on the polished marble floor in his ten-thousand-dollar tuxedo, leveling his gaze with the little girl.

""I apologize, Miss Bennett,"" Anthony said with absolute seriousness. ""What am I signing tonight?""

Daisy opened the little portfolio, revealing a piece of paper upon which she had drawn three stick figures holding hands beneath a giant purple sun: a tall man, a pretty woman, and a little girl with a rabbit.

""Family papers,"" Daisy said, her big brown eyes shining brightly. ""If you sign, you have to stay with us forever and never sleep in the basement again.""

A soft, collective gasp echoed through the room. Maria’s hand flew to her mouth, tears shimmering in her eyes.

Anthony looked at the drawing, feeling a lump rise in his throat so large he could barely swallow. He looked up at Maria, seeing the deep, unspoken love and longing reflected in her tear-filled gaze.

""I’ll sign,"" Anthony whispered, his voice trembling with an emotion so profound it silenced the entire hall. ""On one condition.""

May you like

Daisy wrinkled her nose. ""What condition?""

""Your mama has to sign it too.""
