Chapter 10 - A Contract for Life

The summer sun warmed the rolling green lawns of the Caruso estate overlooking the shimmering waters of the Narrows.

The dark iron gates that had once kept the world out were now permanently open to the salt-tinged sea breeze. Children’s laughter echoed across the grounds where armed guards had once paced with scowling faces.

Under the shade of a massive century-old oak tree, a long wooden table was set for Sunday afternoon dinner. Samuel was busy manning the outdoor brick pizza oven, tossing dough into the air with a broad, toothy grin as several veteran dockworkers cheered him on. The terrifying mafia fortress had finally become what it was always meant to be: a home.

Maria stood near the stone balustrade, looking out over the bay where massive cargo ships glided peacefully toward the Atlantic. She wore a simple white sundress, her long hair blowing gently in the warm breeze. On her left ring finger, a flawless five-carat emerald-cut diamond sparkled brilliantly in the afternoon light.

A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a broad, solid chest. Anthony rested his chin lightly on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of jasmine and fresh rain that always clung to her skin.

""What are you thinking about, Mrs. Caruso?"" Anthony murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the side of her neck.

Maria leaned back against him, closing her eyes and letting the deep, overwhelming sense of security wash over her soul. ""I was thinking about the first time I saw you in that kitchen four years ago. You were so cold, so distant. I thought you were made of stone.""

Anthony turned her gently in his arms, his dark eyes filled with endless warmth and reverence. ""I was made of stone, Maria. I spent my whole life building walls to keep people out because I thought love was a weakness that would get me killed. I had all the money in the world, and I was completely empty.""

He reached up, cupping her cheek with his warm palm. ""You and Daisy didn't just save my life from Victor. You saved me from the grave I was digging for my own soul.""

""Mama! Daddy! Look!""

A joyful shout interrupted them.

Down across the manicured lawn, Daisy came running at full speed. She was four years old now, her legs longer, her cheeks rosy with health and boundless happiness. She wore a bright yellow sunhat that bounced with every step. Running right behind her was a golden retriever puppy named Waffles, barking playfully and nipping at the hem of her dress.

And tucked beneath Daisy’s arm, looking slightly battered but proudly maintained, was Biscuit.

Daisy skidded to a halt in front of them, panting with excitement. In her little hand, she held a brand-new clipboard—this one made of polished mahogany, engraved with the words CHIEF EXECUTIVE DAISY in shiny brass letters, a personal gift from Anthony’s board of directors.

""I have a new document!"" Daisy declared triumphantly, holding up a purple crayon.

Anthony laughed—a rich, booming, joyous laugh that had nothing in common with the cracked, painful sound that had escaped his throat in the cellar cage eight months ago. He scooped Daisy up into his strong arms, lifting her high into the air as she giggled with pure delight, before settling her comfortably on his hip.

""Alright, Boss,"" Anthony smiled, tapping her nose with his finger. ""What does the contract say today?""

Daisy held the clipboard out with royal authority, pointing to a single sentence she had painstakingly scribbled in giant, crooked purple block letters:

DADDY CAN NEVER GO ON BUSINESS TRIPS WITHOUT US.

Anthony looked at Maria, whose eyes were shining with golden afternoon light and boundless happiness. He wrapped his free arm around his wife’s waist, pulling her tightly against his side, uniting the three of them into an unbreakable circle of love, loyalty, and redemption.

""That,"" Anthony said, his voice thick with unshakeable conviction as he took the purple crayon and signed his name with a flourish, ""is the easiest contract I will ever sign in my life."""
