Chapter 7 - The Master’s Reckoning

The heavy double doors of the library flew open with a resounding bang that rattled the oil paintings on the wood-paneled walls.

Victor was crawling across the Persian rug on his hands and knees, his breath coming in ragged, wheezing gasps as he tried desperately to reach the hidden safe behind the bookshelf. The sedative had paralyzed his lower limbs, leaving him dragging himself like a wounded reptile.

He heard the heavy, deliberate thud of work boots stepping across the threshold.

""Frank?"" Victor slurred, squinting up through the haze, thinking his enforcer had arrived. ""Help me up... get the car...""

""Frank is outside tying your boys to the bumpers, Victor,"" a cold, baritone voice echoed through the high-ceilinged room.

Victor’s entire body went rigid. A chill colder than ocean ice shot down his spine. He slowly, painfully rolled onto his back, pushing himself against the base of the sofa.

Standing before him was Anthony Caruso.

Anthony looked like a ghost risen from the grave to claim vengeance. His bruised face was set in granite, his dark eyes burning with an icy, unforgiving wrath that made Victor’s blood run cold. Flanking Anthony on either side were Samuel Russo and Frank Moretti, both armed, their expressions hard and unforgiving. Behind them stood Maria, holding Daisy safely in her arms.

""Anthony..."" Victor gasped, terror finally piercing through the chemical fog in his brain. ""Tony... listen to me... it was a misunderstanding... I was trying to protect the family... the board was moving against us...""

""A misunderstanding?"" Anthony took two slow, measured steps forward. Each step seemed to shake the very foundations of the room. ""You put me in a cage built by my grandfather. You starved me for four days. You had your thugs threaten Maria and her daughter in my own kitchen.""

""I kept you alive!"" Victor shrieked, tears of pure cowardice leaking from his eyes as he scrambled backward against the wall. ""I didn't kill you, Tony! I could have put a bullet in your head in that parking garage, but I kept you alive because we’re blood! We’re cousins!""

""You kept me alive because you needed my corporate signatures to unlock the Swiss holdings, Victor,"" Anthony said with deadly calm, standing directly over his trembling cousin. ""You didn't spare me out of love. You spared me out of greed.""

Daisy wriggled out of Maria’s arms, dropping lightly onto the carpet. Before Maria could stop her, the little girl marched straight up to Victor, clutching Biscuit by the ears.

""You’re a bad boy,"" Daisy declared, pointing a tiny finger at the fallen mafia lieutenant. ""You stole Mr. Anthony’s name on the napkins. That's cheating in office.""

Victor stared at the child in horror. He remembered the torn napkins in the pantry. He remembered the little shadow watching him from behind the door. ""You... you little rat...""

Anthony’s foot lashed out with lightning speed. The heavy boot slammed into the floor an inch from Victor’s ear, splintering the baseboard. Victor screamed, flinching into a fetal ball.

""Look at her, Victor,"" Anthony snarled, his voice dropping into a terrifying guttural growl that made the entire room hold its breath. ""This child has more honor, more courage, and more loyalty in her little finger than you have in your entire rotten body. You thought you could take my life. But she bought it from me with a cup of water and a purple crayon.""

Anthony stepped back, turning toward Frank and Samuel. ""Take him out to the old shipping yard in Newark. Strip him of every dime, every car, every piece of jewelry he owns. Put him on a tramp steamer bound for South America under a forged deckhand passport. If he ever sets foot on American soil again, bury him in the concrete foundation of the new pier.""

""No! Tony, please! Have mercy! We’re family!"" Victor wept openly, clawing at Anthony’s boots as Frank’s men hauled him up by his armpits and dragged him kicking and screaming down the corridor.

The library fell into dead, ringing silence.

Anthony stood alone in the center of the grand room, his chest heaving. The nightmare was over, but the silence felt heavy, haunted by years of cold isolation. He turned slowly toward Maria and Daisy, who were watching him from the doorway.

His harsh, terrifying aura melted away completely, replaced by an expression of deep, humble vulnerability.

""Maria,"" Anthony whispered softly. ""I think it’s time we rewrite the rules of this house.""
