Chapter 3 - The Breach at Midnight

The storm was tearing through the Boston suburbs with violent fury, tree branches whipping against the limestone facade of the Vargas estate. Inside, the quiet grandeur of the mansion transformed into a fortress under siege.

""How many?"" Zane demanded, moving behind his desk with lethal calm. He slipped a heavy semi-automatic pistol from a biometric wall safe, checking the magazine with practiced efficiency.

""At least eight,"" Blake replied, pulling a compact radio from his tactical belt. ""They used military-grade signal jammers. The main gates were cut with thermite. They aren't here for a shakedown, Zane. They're an extermination squad.""

Nora backed against the bookshelves, her hands clutched over her chest. The smell of burning electronics drifted through the ventilation shafts. Panic surged through her, the phantom memories of smoke and screaming sirens from Chicago threatening to paralyze her.

Zane turned to her instantly. He stepped close, placing a heavy, warm hand on her shoulder. The calm in his touch was grounding. ""Look at me, Nora.""

She forced her eyes up to meet his.

""Nobody harms anyone in this house while I draw breath,"" he said, his tone low and resolute. ""Blake, take Nora down through the wine cellar to the subterranean bunker beneath the old stables.""

""Boss, you need me on the ground floor,"" Blake protested. ""The guards at the gate haven't checked in. You can't take six men alone with a wounded arm.""

""I'm not leaving her unprotected,"" Zane snapped. ""Marcus knows the layout of the upper floors. If they take the house, they search the bedrooms first. Move!""

Nora grabbed Zane’s sleeve. ""The back service stairs,"" she said, her voice shaking but clear. ""When I restored the tapestries in the dining hall, I found the dumbwaiter shaft behind the oak paneling. It drops straight into the old laundry room, ten yards from the carriage house tunnel. If they came in through the front gates, they’ll bottleneck at the grand staircase.""

Zane stared at her for a split second, surprised by her tactical observation, then nodded sharply. ""Good girl. Blake, route the house staff through the laundry tunnel. I’ll meet you at the secondary checkpoint.""

""No,"" Nora insisted, surprising herself. ""You can’t reload your sidearm with that splint on your finger! The tendon is inflamed. If you fire a heavy caliber, the recoil will tear the stitches Dr. Keller put in your forearm.""

Zane glanced down at his bandaged arm. She was right. The swelling had begun to recede, but the laceration along his forearm was deep.

Gunfire shattered the silence below. The sound of splintering mahogany and shattering crystal echoed up the grand marble staircase, accompanied by the muffled shouts of invading men.

""Move, now!"" Zane barked, gripping Nora’s hand and pulling her through a side door concealed behind a wall-length mirror.

The passage was narrow, smelling of old plaster and dust. They hurried through the dark, guided only by the small tactical penlight Zane held between his teeth. Nora’s lungs burned, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Every instinct told her to curl into a ball and hide, but the firm grip of Zane’s fingers kept her moving.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the floorboards directly ahead of them. A heavy boot kicked through the lath and plaster of the hidden passage. A man in tactical black gear stepped into the beam of Zane’s light, an automatic submachine gun raised.

""Vargas!"" the intruder shouted.

Before the man could pull the trigger, Nora reacted on pure, desperate adrenaline. She was carrying her heavy tailoring kit around her shoulder—a brass-bound wooden box containing heavy steel shears, weights, and brass awls. With all the momentum of her body, she swung the case directly into the intruder’s throat.

The heavy box struck the man with a sickening crunch. He staggered backward, gagging and dropping his weapon. Zane stepped inside the man’s guard in a blur of motion, driving his elbow into the soldier's jaw, knocking him cold against the stone wall.

Zane turned to Nora, his eyes wide in the gloom. ""A sewing kit?""

""It's solid cherry wood,"" Nora gasped, clutching her bruised shoulder. ""And the shears weigh three pounds.""

A faint smirk appeared on Zane’s lips despite the chaos. ""Remind me never to criticize your needlework.""

He grabbed the fallen rifle with his good hand, shoved the side door open, and pulled Nora into the driving rain outside. Behind them, orange flames began to lick at the high windows of the library, illuminating the storm in a violent, dancing blaze.
