Chapter 1 - The Crimson Thread

""You’ve been trying to pull the ring toward the fingertip?"" Nora asked, her soft voice cutting through the heavy tension like a fresh pair of tailoring shears.

Dr. Keller crossed his arms, his mouth tightening into a thin, angry line. ""Of course we pulled. Blood pooling causes tissue expansion. If you pull against swollen tissue, the blood acts like a hydraulic wedge. It bunches the flesh into a ridge behind the band. Any first-year medical student knows that.""

""Then you also know,"" Nora said evenly, refusing to cower, ""that pulling only drives more fluid into the obstruction. You aren't fighting the gold band. You are fighting trapped fluid.""

Zane Vargas watched her. The room was deathly quiet except for the muffled patter of cold New England rain against the thick leaded glass. His breathing was shallow, his jaw clenched against the throbbing heat surging through his arm, but his dark gray eyes never drifted from Nora’s face. ""Explain it to me, Nora.""

Nora knelt beside his chair. She smelled faintly of cedarwood and dried lavender, a quiet, domestic contrast to the smell of copper, gun grease, and antiseptic that choked the study. ""If you wrap the finger firmly from the tip downward toward the ring, you compress the tissue. You push the edema—the trapped blood and fluid—back down past the knuckle. Then, you slip one end of the silk thread underneath the gold band. As you unwind the thread from below, it forces the ring forward, millimeter by millimeter, over the flattened surface.""

""That is medieval folklore!"" Keller snapped, gesturing violently with the steel shears. ""If the thread snaps, or if she cuts off capillary circulation for even three minutes, the tissue will turn necrotic! Zane, don't let this woman play parlor tricks while your hand is dying!""

Zane didn't look at the doctor. He looked down at Nora’s hands. They were pale, capable, dusted with tiny calluses along the index fingers from thousands of hours spent guiding steel through velvet. ""Will it work?""

""It worked for my grandmother,"" Nora whispered. Her heart was beating so fiercely in her throat she thought he must hear it. ""High-tensile waxed silk doesn't snap. It bears over forty pounds of tension before it frays. But it will hurt. The pressure against the inflamed bone will feel like fire.""

Zane extended his left arm farther into the light. ""Do it.""

Blake Russo stepped forward, uneasy. ""Boss—""

""Step back, Blake,"" Zane said softly. ""Give her the light.""

Nora didn't hesitate. She couldn't afford to let her hands shake. She took a curved tapestry needle, threading the crimson silk through its dull eye. Leaning close, she slid the blunt eyelet under the gold signet band, pulling several inches of red string out the other side toward his wrist. Zane did not flinch, though a drop of sweat rolled down his temple.

Next came the compression. Nora began wrapping the red silk tightly around his swollen finger, starting just above the ring and winding upward toward his blackened nail. She laid each coil edge-to-edge, pressing the swollen tissue down with firm, merciless precision.

Dr. Keller checked his watch, his breathing erratic. ""Ten minutes. If there's no progress by twelve twenty, I'm cutting the band off, order or no order.""

Nora tuned out the room. She was alone with the rhythm of the thread, the heat radiating from his bruised skin, and the steady, iron-hard pulse under his wrist. Her fingers moved like lightning, wrapping the finger into a tight cocoon of crimson silk.

""Ready,"" she murmured.

She took the loose lower end of the thread from beneath the ring. With a steady, circular motion, she began to pull.

As the thread unspooled, it caught the underside of the heavy gold band. The ring nudged forward an eighth of an inch.

Zane’s breath hissed between his teeth. The muscles in his forearms turned to stone, but he made no sound.

""Keep going,"" he commanded hoarsely.

Nora maintained the angle, unwinding the thread loop by loop. The gold band slid over the compressed joint, scraping over the bruised knuckle. With a soft click, the heavy gold ring popped free into Nora’s palm, slick with sweat and silk.

A collective breath left the room.

May you like

Nora sat back on her heels, gasping as if she had surfaced from deep water. In her palm lay the family ring, dripping red thread. But as the gold rolled over, Nora noticed something etched deep into the inner curve—a hidden sequence of numbers beneath the Vargas seal that had never been exposed before.

Zane reached down, taking her trembling wrist with his uninjured hand. ""You saved it,"" he whispered, staring not at the gold, but directly into her wide hazel eyes.
