Chapter 5 - The Corporate Ambush

By two o’clock that afternoon, the news of Isabella Moretti’s critical hospitalization had leaked to the financial press, accompanied by sensationalist headlines detailing Vincent’s alleged abandonment and reckless negligence. The stock price of Moretti Logistics plummeted twelve percent in four hours. Shareholders panicked. Julian Vance seized the moment, calling an emergency session of the executive board on the thirty-fourth floor of the Moretti Tower.
Vincent walked into the boardroom without changing his clothes. His white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his tie was gone, and his stubble was dark against his gaunt, pale face. Yet the dangerous, lethal aura that had made him the most feared industrialist in the Midwest was not diminished—it had curdled into something far more terrifying.
Julian stood at the head of the mahogany conference table, surrounded by twelve nervous board members. Vanessa Cole sat in the back corner of the gallery, wearing an expensive new coat, an arrogant smirk playing on her lips.
""Vincent,"" Julian began, feigning sympathy. ""Given the tragic personal circumstances involving your wife, the board believes your judgment is severely compromised. Under Article Nine of the corporate charter, when a primary shareholder is incapacitated by personal crisis, the executive committee may vote to reassign operational authority to preserve shareholder value.""
The board members looked down at their leather blotters, terrified to meet Vincent’s eyes.
Vincent didn't sit. He walked slowly around the table, his footsteps heavy against the hardwood floor. He stopped directly behind Julian’s chair.
""Article Nine,"" Vincent said softly, his voice dangerously calm. ""A clause designed to prevent a company from falling into chaos when a leader loses his mind.""
""Precisely,"" Julian smiled thinly, signaling the secretary. ""We have the proxy votes. Vanessa has provided financial documentation showing that Eleanor Moretti has initiated legal proceedings to revoke your family trust holdings. Without Eleanor's backing, your voting stock drops to twenty-eight percent. You are in the minority, Vincent.""
Vanessa leaned forward, her voice dripping with triumphant malice. ""We warned you, Vincent. You should have stayed at the dinner. Now you lose everything.""
Vincent didn't look at Vanessa. He looked down at Julian.
""You spent twelve hours organizing a coup,"" Vincent murmured, ""while I spent twelve hours reading my wife's medical records. You think my mother stripped my power?""
The boardroom doors opened. Marcus Vance entered, accompanied by two federal auditors and an officer from the United States Treasury Department.
""Julian Vance,"" Marcus announced, laying a heavy legal brief on the center of the table. ""For the past eighteen months, you have utilized off-shore shell corporations registered in the Cayman Islands to short Moretti stock while routing proprietary terminal shipping manifests to your private holding firm. Vanessa Cole was registered as a twenty-percent beneficiary on that account.""
Vanessa’s smirk vanished instantly. Her skin drained of color. ""What?""
""My mother didn't revoke my trust to destroy me, Julian,"" Vincent said, bending down until his face was inches from Julian’s ear. ""She revoked it to protect the assets from the discovery audit I ordered six months ago. I knew you were stealing from the docks. I knew Vanessa was feeding you internal memos. I tolerated the noise because I was arrogant enough to believe I could control both of you while keeping my marriage in a gilded cage.""
Vincent stood upright, towering over the frozen room.
""The audit is complete. The federal warrants have been signed. You aren't taking over this company, Julian. You are going to a federal penitentiary for wire fraud, corporate espionage, and grand larceny.""
Two uniformed federal agents stepped through the doors and placed Julian in handcuffs. As Julian was dragged out of the room, shouting obscenities, Vanessa scrambled to her feet, her hands shaking as she reached for her coat.
""Vincent, please,"" she stammered, tears of sheer panic welling in her eyes. ""I didn't know Julian was doing anything illegal! He told me he was protecting your interests! Vincent, look at me!""
Vincent finally turned his cold, dead gaze onto the woman who had helped him destroy his own life.
""I am looking at you, Vanessa,"" Vincent said, each word landing like an executioner's axe. ""And for the life of me, I cannot understand how I ever allowed a creature as hollow, shallow, and pathetic as you to make me forget the woman who was willing to die for my mother. Get out of my building before I instruct the marshals to search your handbag for stolen corporate bonds.""
Vanessa fled the boardroom in tears, the sound of her frantic heels fading down the hall. Vincent stood alone in the center of the room. The board members sat in terrified silence.
Vincent didn't care about the victory. He didn't care about the company. He turned to Marcus. ""Is the car waiting?""
May you like
""Yes, Mr. Moretti,"" Marcus replied softly.
""Take me back to the hospital. Even if I have to sleep on the pavement outside her window, that is where I belong.""
