Chapter 2 - The Cost of Cold Blood

The elevator chimed at the end of the intensive care wing, shattering the heavy silence. Eleanor Moretti emerged in a wheelchair pushed by her private nurse, her face pale and lined with age, but her eyes burning with an unmistakable fury. Beside her walked Marcus Vance, Vincent’s chief legal counsel and confidant of twenty years.

""Mother,"" Vincent rasped, rising to his feet like an old man dragged out of a grave. His voice shook. ""You shouldn't be out of the residential wing. Your vitals—""

""Be silent,"" Eleanor whispered. Her tone held none of the maternal warmth that had sustained their family through decades of turmoil. It was razor-sharp, cutting Vincent deeper than any knife. ""Marcus called me twenty minutes ago. Tell me Dr. Bennett is lying. Tell me my daughter is not in that room bleeding out.""

Vincent couldn't lift his head. He held out the crushed envelope, his fingers trembling so violently the pages fluttered. Eleanor snatched them from his grip. As her eyes swept over Isabella’s handwritten note and the marrow donation agreement, her frail frame began to shake with profound, righteous indignation.

""You blind, arrogant fool,"" Eleanor breathed, tears spilling over her wrinkled cheeks. ""Do you have any concept of what that girl has done for you? For this family?""

""Mother, I didn't know,"" Vincent pleaded, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. ""She didn't tell me what the appointment was. She just said—""

""Because she knew you wouldn't listen!"" Eleanor struck the armrest of her wheelchair with a clenched fist. ""For six months, you have allowed that cheap social climber Vanessa Cole to parade through my home, treating Isabella like an unwanted servant! Isabella never said a word to you because she possessed the dignity you threw away the day you traded loyalty for ego!""

Eleanor looked up at Marcus, her voice dropping into a deadly, icy cadence. ""Marcus. Bring me the family trust documents by midnight. Every asset Vincent acquired under the Moretti maritime charter requires my executive countersignature. Strip his executive power over the residential holdings. If Isabella does not walk out of that operating theater alive, my son will not inherit a single brick of this dynasty. He will leave this city with the exact clothes on his back.""

Marcus didn't hesitate. He inclined his head in silent deference. ""Understood, Mrs. Moretti. The injunctions are already drafted.""

Vincent didn't even argue. The empire he had built meant nothing. The millions sitting in offshore vaults, the commercial towers along Michigan Avenue—it was all worthless sawdust. All he could see was Isabella standing in the foyer in her faded blue cardigan, clutching that envelope against her ribs while Vanessa laughed from the top of the marble staircase.

Suddenly, Dr. Bennett stepped out of the surgical doors, tearing his sterile mask down with bloodstained latex gloves. His eyes were shadowed with exhaustion, and the grim line of his jaw sent a shockwave of dread down Vincent’s spine.

""Doctor,"" Vincent choked out, lunging forward. ""Is she...""

""She survived the initial hemorrhage,"" Bennett said bluntly, holding up a hand to keep Vincent back. ""Her splenic artery ruptured under the acute hemodynamic strain. The stimulation medication multiplied her cellular count, but her systemic blood pressure bottomed out due to severe, unmanaged hypovolemic shock. She was carrying three units of internal blood loss when the paramedics brought her in.""

""Can I see her?"" Vincent asked, tears finally running unchecked down his face. ""Please. Just let me hold her hand.""

""No,"" Dr. Bennett said, his voice cold as a winter gale. ""She is in a medically induced coma to protect her neurological functions. And even if she were awake, Mr. Moretti, she gave explicit verbal instructions to the EMTs before she lost consciousness.""

Bennett reached into his clipboard pocket and pulled out Isabella's signed medical intake form.

""She designated Eleanor Moretti as her sole medical proxy,"" Bennett said, meeting Vincent’s devastated gaze with unyielding contempt. ""And she wrote a specific rider. Vincent Moretti is strictly prohibited from entering her recovery suite. If you attempt to breach her room, hospital security has standing orders to have you arrested.""
