Chapter 4 - The Sound of Shattered Glass

Across town, Vanessa Cole stood in the grand foyer of the Lake Forest mansion, her voice screeching at a pitch that echoed off the vaulted ceilings.

""Take your hands off those bags!"" she screamed, lunging toward two burly security guards who were methodically dumping designer dresses, diamond bracelets, and French perfumes into heavy black utility crates. ""Do you have any idea who I am? Vincent bought those for me! That Birkin bag cost forty thousand dollars!""

Frank Reyes stepped between Vanessa and the crates, his massive frame unmoving. He held an iPad displaying a signed court injunction and a property revocation order bearing Eleanor Moretti’s primary signature.

""Miss Cole,"" Frank said with flat, military detachment. ""Every item purchased on the corporate accounts of the Moretti Trust remains the sole property of the estate. You have four minutes to step through those front gates before the Lake Forest police department enters the driveway to execute this warrant.""

""Vincent wouldn't do this!"" Vanessa hissed, her face contorting with rage. Her pristine blond hair was unraveled, and her designer makeup was smeared with sweat and fury. ""He loves me! He can't stand that fat, boring South Side nobody! She tricked him! She staged that collapse to ruin our night!""

""Mr. Moretti personally authorized this removal,"" Frank replied, his eyes narrowing with deep disgust. ""And if you mention Mrs. Moretti's name again on this property, I will ensure the police add harassment and defamation charges to your docket. Now walk.""

Humiliated, Vanessa grabbed her small personal handbag—the only thing Frank allowed her to keep—and stormed out into the pouring rain. The iron gates slammed shut behind her with the finality of a prison door. Standing on the wet asphalt, watching her luxury sedan being loaded onto the flatbed of a commercial tow truck, Vanessa pulled out her phone and dialed a private number.

""Julian?"" she spoke through clenched teeth, her voice trembling with venomous malice. ""It's Vanessa. Vincent’s little charity-case wife collapsed. Eleanor is cutting him off from the trust. The board is meeting this afternoon to discuss the maritime port leases. If we leak the negligence reports and the transfer of voting proxies right now, the share price will plummet forty percent before the opening bell.""

On the other end of the line, Julian Vance—the disgruntled vice-president of Moretti Enterprises and Marcus Vance's estranged brother—laughed softly. ""Are you certain she's incapacitated?""

""She's practically dead in intensive care,"" Vanessa lied, her eyes gleaming with vengeful spite. ""Vincent is completely broken. He's sitting at the hospital like a wounded dog. He isn't watching the markets. He isn't watching the board. This is our only window to strip his voting majority and take the downtown terminals.""

""Send the files,"" Julian instructed. ""By noon, Vincent Moretti won't have an empire left to run.""

Back at Lakeview Memorial, the silence of the private recovery floor was broken by the rhythmic, steady beep of a cardiac monitor. Isabella opened her eyes. The world was a blur of soft white lights and the faint smell of antiseptic. Her throat was raw, parched like desert sand.

""Eleanor..."" she managed to whisper, her fingers weakly twitching against the sheets.

Eleanor sat beside her bed, holding Isabella’s frail, calloused hand between both of hers. ""I'm here, my sweet girl. I'm right here. Don't try to speak. You're safe.""

Isabella’s hazel eyes drifted across the room, searching the empty corners, the closed blinds, the quiet door. A single tear escaped the corner of her eye, tracing a path through the pale hollow of her cheek.

""He didn't come... did he?"" she breathed, the question carrying no anger, only the crushing, familiar weight of absolute resignation.

Eleanor’s heart fractured. She pressed Isabella’s hand to her cheek. ""He is outside that door, Isabella. He has been there all night. He knows everything. He knows what you tried to do for me.""

Isabella closed her eyes, turning her head toward the window where the cold Chicago rain beat against the glass. ""Tell him to go home, Eleanor. Please. Tell him there is nothing left here for him to buy.""
