Chapter 8 - The Price of Pride

The recovery was brutal, measured not in days, but in millimeter shifts of healing tissue and agonizing physical therapy.
Nathan refused to let a private nurse handle the intimate burdens of Claire’s rehabilitation. When she could finally stand, he was the one who held her trembling waist, taking the weight off her fragile sternum as she took two agonizing steps down the hospital hallway.
""One more step, Claire,"" he would whisper in her ear, his breath warm against her temple, his arms a steady, unbreakable fortress around her. ""I've got you. I'm not letting go.""
""Nathan, you're the CEO of Mercer Logistics,"" she gasped through the pain, leaning her head against his shoulder. ""Your board called Samuel three times this morning about the harbor expansion.""
""Let the harbor sink,"" Nathan replied without a second's hesitation. ""My empire is standing right here in a hospital gown.""
Rumors had exploded across the North Carolina business elite. The Whitmore family had leaked fabricated stories to the tabloids, claiming Claire was an unstable recluse who had faked an illness to derail Nathan’s lucrative merger. Vanessa had appeared on a regional business broadcast, dropping subtle hints about Nathan’s 'erratic behavior' and questioning whether Mercer Logistics was solvent under his leadership.
On the third week of Claire’s hospital stay, Nathan addressed it.
He didn't send a public relations spokesperson. He called an impromptu press conference directly in the courtyard of Charlotte Memorial Hospital. Dressed in a simple charcoal suit, without the diamond cufflinks or tailored vanity of his former life, Nathan stood before thirty microphones and television cameras.
""A few weeks ago,"" Nathan spoke, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet gardens, ""my wife, Claire Mercer, underwent emergency open-heart surgery to repair an aortic tear. She survived because the surgical team here worked a miracle.""
He paused, looking directly into the primary news camera.
""There have been stories circulated by Whitmore Capital suggesting our marriage is a sham, and that my company’s focus has been compromised. Let me be unequivocally clear: Mercer Logistics has severed all banking ties with Whitmore Capital as of 8:00 a.m. today. We have redirected our twenty-million-dollar endowment directly to the pediatric and adult cardiology wings of Charlotte Memorial.""
A reporter shouted from the front row: ""Mr. Mercer, what about the rumors regarding your relationship with Vanessa Whitmore?""
May you like
Nathan’s jaw tightened. ""Vanessa Whitmore was a business associate who deliberately hid my phone while my wife was dying. Any suggestion of an inappropriate relationship was fabricated to manipulate a corporate merger that will never take place. My wife, Claire, is the only partner I have ever had, and the only one I will ever want. To anyone who thinks my devotion to her makes my company vulnerable—test me. You will find that a man fighting for his wife's life has nothing left to fear.""
Inside the third-floor recovery suite, Claire watched the broadcast on the wall-mounted television, her hand pressed against the steady, rhythmic mechanical tick inside her chest, tears slipping silently down her cheeks.
