Chapter 10 - One Second Sooner

One year later.

The newly built Rose and Claire Mercer Cardiac Pavilion at Charlotte Memorial Hospital opened beneath a clear spring sky. A crowd of hundreds had gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, including doctors, nurses, civic leaders, and former cardiac patients whose lives had been saved by the facility's state-of-the-art diagnostic technology.

Dr. Andrew Hale stood near the entrance, chatting with Samuel Price, who was proudly wearing a new, custom-tailored chauffeur’s uniform.

""Look at them,"" Dr. Hale said, gesturing with his champagne glass toward the terrace above.

Claire stood near the railing, wearing a simple, elegant rose-colored dress that fluttered in the warm Carolina breeze. Her hair was pinned up, revealing the healthy flush of her neck and shoulders. Beside her, Nathan’s arm was wrapped securely around her waist, his thumb gently caressing her hip in an unconscious, instinctual rhythm of protective affection.

He didn't care about the photographers snapping photos below. He didn't care about the business reporters analyzing the philanthropic foundation’s tax structure. He looked only at Claire, leaning down occasionally to whisper something in her ear that made her throw her head back and laugh.

""He hasn't let go of her hand in twelve months,"" Samuel smiled warmly. ""I don't think he ever will.""

As the applause swelled for the opening remarks, Nathan guided Claire away from the edge of the terrace and back toward the private botanical conservatory built behind the surgical wing.

The air inside the glass house was warm and sweet, filled with the lush, waxy green leaves of blooming white shrubs.

Gardenias. Hundreds of them. Their intoxicating, creamy fragrance filled the air, completely erasing the phantom scent of hospital floor wax and childhood sorrow that had haunted Nathan for nearly a quarter of a century.

Nathan pulled Claire gently into the center of the walkway, turning her so she faced him beneath the glass dome.

""Do you remember what you told me in the ICU?"" Claire asked softly, her fingers tracing the collar of his shirt.

""I told you a lot of things while you were asleep, Claire. Most of them were desperate promises.""

""You said you spent the rest of your life wishing you had let go of Vanessa’s hand one second earlier,"" she whispered, looking up into his dark, devoted eyes.

Nathan smiled, a soft, peaceful expression that erased every harsh line from his face. He reached down, unbuttoning his cuff, and pulled from his inner breast pocket a small, polished silver locket.

Inside the locket were two dried petals: one from the gardenia she had pressed into her poetry book two years ago, and one fresh, velvety white petal he had plucked from the bush beside them this morning.

""I don't wish for that anymore,"" Nathan said softly, lifting her hand to his lips and pressing a warm, lingering kiss against the platinum band on her ring finger.

""Why not?""

May you like

""Because if I had let go one second sooner, we would have kept hiding behind our polite silence,"" Nathan murmured, pulling her flush against his chest so that her synthetic valve ticked rhythmically right over the steady, thunderous beat of his own heart. ""That elevator showed me my worst nightmare. And it gave me the only life worth living.""

He lowered his head and kissed her, surrounded by the sweet scent of blooming gardenias, while the world outside continued to turn, completely forgotten."
