Chapter 7 - Awakening to Silence

Claire opened her eyes on the fifth morning to the steady hum of medical machinery.

The harsh morning light was muted by half-closed blinds. Her throat felt raw, stripped by the ventilator that had only been removed hours before. Every breath was an agony of tight ribs and stitched muscle, but beneath the bandages, the chaotic fluttering that had plagued her for a decade was gone, replaced by a deep, rhythmic mechanical tick of a synthetic heart valve.

Tick. Tick. Tick.

She moved her fingers slightly across the coarse hospital blanket. A heavy, warm weight was pressing against her left side.

She looked down.

Nathan was asleep, his head resting against the edge of her mattress, his fingers still wrapped tightly around her wrist, right over her pulse point. His dark hair was disheveled, shadows bruised deep under his eyes, and his tailored dress shirt was rumpled and open at the collar. In his right hand, resting on the sheet, was the faded brown gardenia from their wedding.

Claire’s breath hitched.

The tiny sound woke him instantly. Nathan jerked upright, his dark eyes snapping open, wild with alarm until they locked onto hers.

""Claire,"" he breathed, the name coming out ragged and thick. He stood up so quickly his chair scraped against the tile. ""You're awake. Don't try to speak—I'll call Dr. Hale—""

""Nathan,"" she whispered, her voice barely a scrape of sound.

He froze, his hand hovering over the nurse call button. He turned slowly, looking at her as if she were made of spun glass that might shatter if he breathed too loudly.

""Why are you here?"" she asked softly.

The question hit him like a physical blow. Nathan flinched, stepping closer to the bed, his knees sinking down beside her mattress so he was level with her eyes.

""Where else would I be?"" he asked, his voice shaking.

""The gala..."" she murmured, her gray eyes clear despite the haze of pain medication. ""Vanessa. The press.""

Nathan closed his eyes, a wave of profound shame washing over his features. ""Vanessa is gone. The gala was an illusion. I didn't hold her hand because I wanted her, Claire. I let her take my phone because I was a fool who thought I was playing a game of business. When I saw you on that gurney... when I saw you look at me...""

A tear spilled down Nathan’s cheek, unbidden and raw. He didn't wipe it away.

""I thought you died believing I was like my father,"" he choked out, leaning his forehead against her uninjured arm. ""I thought you went into that dark room thinking you were completely alone.""

Claire looked down at the dark head bowed beside her heart. ""Nathan... we never had that kind of marriage.""

""Then I will tear up the contract,"" he said fiercely, lifting his head, his eyes burning through his tears. ""I went to your room. I saw the book. I saw the photograph, Claire.""

Claire’s breath caught in her throat. Her pale cheeks flushed faintly with color. ""You weren't supposed to see that.""

""I was supposed to see it two years ago!"" he cried softly. ""I was supposed to see you! You spent two years dying right in front of me, and I was so obsessed with building walls to protect myself from pain that I built a prison for the only person who ever truly loved me.""
