Chapter 8 - The War Room

The penthouse was transformed within two hours into a fortified command center.
Dante had brought three technical analysts who set up secure satellite relays across the dining table.
Monitors glowed with blue blueprints of cargo ports in Bayonne, New Jersey, wiretap transcripts, and real-time highway camera feeds.
Tessa stood beside the large digital drafting board, sleeves rolled up, her hair pulled back into a tight ponytail.
The waitress had vanished completely.
In her place stood the daughter of Sean Callahan, pointing out shipping docks and hidden storage facilities with cold, precise efficiency.
"Murphy never stores his heavy contraband in warehouse buildings," Tessa said, tapping the map of the Bayonne terminal. "He uses refrigerated freight containers marked with forged commercial poultry inspection stamps. He’s used that exact cover since I was ten years old."
Roman stood right beside her, watching her work with quiet admiration.
"Dante," Roman called without turning his head. "Check the manifests for Bayonne Pier 4. Look for Atlantic Poultry distribution."
Dante’s fingers flew across the keyboard.
Ten seconds later, a red flag flashed on the center display.
"Bingo," Dante muttered, his jaw dropping slightly. "Six refrigerated forty-foot containers arrived at Pier 4 midnight yesterday from Dublin via Halifax. Registered to a dummy shipping company out of Newark."
"What's inside?" Roman asked.
"Two hundred million in untraceable synthetic pharmaceuticals and black-market military hardware," Dante read from the encrypted customs clearance log. "Murphy’s entire operational bankroll for the next five years."
Roman looked at Tessa, an eyebrow slightly raised.
"You remembered that from fourteen years ago?"
"When your father’s life is threatened every single week, you pay attention to the names on the trucks parked outside your house," Tessa replied, her jaw set firm. "Murphy killed my father because my dad refused to stamp those forged manifests at the Boston docks. If Murphy is sitting in Bayonne tonight, he’s waiting for those containers to clear inspection at sunrise."
"Then we make sure they never clear," Roman said.
He turned toward his security team, his voice radiating cold, absolute command.
"Assemble twenty men. Call the Port Authority tactical division, but only the internal affairs unit under Captain Miller. Tell him Bellamy has Murphy cornered with five shipping containers of illegal contraband."
"And what about us?" Tessa asked, stepping directly into Roman's path.
Roman looked down at her, his expression softening by an imperceptible margin.
"You stay here, Tessa. You’ve done more than enough. You gave me his location. Let my men finish this."
"No," Tessa said, her eyes blazing with fierce, unyielding determination. "Declan Murphy took my father away from me when I was sixteen years old. He forced my sister and me to live in hiding like hunted animals for a decade."
She reached out and placed her hand flat against Roman’s chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart beneath the silk shirt.
"You don't get to fight my war without me, Bellamy. Hand me my weapon."
Roman stared at her for a long, electric moment.

A slow, dangerous smile spread across his handsome face.
"Dante," Roman said, never taking his eyes off Tessa. "Bring Miss Callahan a tactical vest."
