Chapter 5 - The Glass Falls

Tessa didn't hesitate.

Nine years of holding her breath, hiding in plain sight, and serving drinks to corrupt predators condensed into half a heartbeat of pure clarity.

She shifted her aim two inches to the left, squeezing the trigger twice.

The double tap struck the heavy metal chain suspending the overhead halogen crane hook.

At the exact same instant, a high-caliber round from Dante’s rifle tore through the glass skylight above, shattering the crane’s electric winch motor.

The massive steel hook and fifty-pound industrial light fixture plunged straight down into the center of the room.

The crash was deafening.

Sparks exploded across the wet concrete floor like white-hot fireworks, plunging the boiler room into blinding strobe light and thick, acrid smoke.

Vance roared in panic, jumping backward as the heavy light crushed the iron staging platform inches from his boots.

His shot went wild, embedding itself harmlessly into the brick ceiling.

"Move!" Roman commanded.

Roman moved with shocking, lethal speed.

He closed the distance between himself and Vance’s lead enforcer before the man could shoulder his rifle, catching the barrel with his left hand and driving a vicious palm strike into the man's throat.

The guard dropped like a severed marionette.

To the left, a second gunman spun toward Roman, but Tessa was already firing.

Her rounds struck the guard's kneecap and thigh, sending him crashing into a stack of rusted steel drums with a metallic bellow of pain.

From the high catwalks, Dante’s rifle cracked two more times with clinical, rhythmic precision.

The remaining two guards collapsed behind the boiler pipes, completely neutralized.

Smoke swirled through the freezing room, illuminated only by the sparking severed power cables dancing across the floor.

Vance scrambled on his hands and knees through the puddles of dirty water, his expensive camel-hair coat ruined, desperately clawing for his dropped revolver.

A heavy, polished leather boot stepped squarely onto Vance’s outstretched wrist.

Bone crunched.

Vance shrieked in agony, rolling onto his back and clutching his shattered arm against his ribs.

Roman stood over him, looking down with cold, empty eyes.

The suppressed pistol in his hand was pointed directly between Vance’s eyebrows.

"Please..." Vance gasped, spit flying from his lips as terror finally shattered his arrogance. "Roman... listen to me... it was a business deal... we can split the Brooklyn terminals fifty-fifty... I have ten million in bearer bonds in Zurich..."

Roman didn't answer.

He didn't gloat, and he didn't raise his voice.

He simply pulled back the hammer.

"No!" Tessa shouted, stepping forward through the drifting smoke.

Roman paused, his dark eyes turning slowly to look at her over his shoulder.

"He tried to execute me in public, Tessa. He tortured a nineteen-year-old kid. He signed his own death warrant."

"If you shoot him in cold blood right here, you prove everything he said about you is true," Tessa said, her chest heaving as she lowered her weapon to her side. "And you make Owen an accessory to an execution. Let him rot in a federal cell. You have the leverage, Bellamy. Use it like a king, not a butcher."

Roman stared at her for three long, agonizing seconds.

The tension in the frozen room was thick enough to choke on.

Slowly, Roman’s thumb eased the hammer of the pistol back down into place.

He looked down at Vance, whose face was soaked with sweat and tears of relief.

"You're going to sign over every asset, every ledger, and every dock lease to the Greybridge trust by dawn, Marcus," Roman whispered coldly. "Then Dante is delivering you to the federal prosecutor’s front porch in Newark with enough evidence to bury you for three lifetimes."

Roman kicked Vance’s dropped revolver across the floor toward Dante, who had just dropped down from the access ladder.

"Get the boy to a private hospital," Roman ordered Dante. "Clean this site. Leave nothing behind."

He turned back toward Tessa, offering her his hand.

"Come, Miss Callahan. It’s past midnight. Let’s get you out of the cold."
