Chapter 7 - Blood on the Assembly Line

Victor panicked, stepping behind Julian Vance and pointing a trembling finger at Elias. “Shoot him! Kill him now! Claim self-defense, he crashed private property!”
Vance raised his pistol, but Elias was already moving with terrifying speed. Having tracked the GPS transponder he had secretly sewn into Noelle’s emerald necklace before they left the estate, Elias didn’t hesitate for a fraction of a second. He grabbed a heavy steel crowbar from the bed of the shattered truck and hurled it with lethal precision.
The steel bar struck Vance’s forearm with a sickening crack. The gun flew from his grip, skittering across the oil-slicked floor. Vance shrieked in agony, clutching his shattered arm as he collapsed to his knees.
The two hired thugs lunged forward, one pulling a hunting knife from his belt. Elias ducked beneath the wild slash, driving his shoulder into the man’s ribs and slamming him into the steel base of a stamping press. The impact knocked the wind from the attacker’s lungs, dropping him instantly.
The second thug tackled Elias from behind, wrapping an arm around his throat in a brutal chokehold. Elias drove his elbow backward into the man’s solar plexus, twisting out of the grip and landing a devastating right cross that sent the man crashing into a stack of wooden crates, knocking him unconscious.
Victor turned and ran toward the rear emergency exit, dropping the manila folder in his haste.
Elias didn’t pursue him. Instead, he dropped to his knees in front of Noelle, his chest heaving with ragged breaths, his hands trembling violently as he pulled a pocket knife to slice through her zip-ties.
“Noelle... are you hurt? Did they touch you?” he gasped, his voice cracked with raw terror.
The moment her hands were free, Noelle threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his chest. “You came... you actually came...”
“I will always come for you,” Elias whispered fiercely, wrapping his arms around her trembling body, pulling her tight against his chest as if he would never let go. “I swear to God, as long as I draw breath, no one will ever lay a hand on you again.”
For a long moment, they held each other amidst the dust, broken wood, and fading engine hum of the ruined factory where her father had once dreamed of greatness. The lingering doubts in Noelle’s heart vanished in the warmth of his embrace. Whatever sins the older generation had committed, Elias’s love was pure, forged in fire and tested by blood.
Noelle pulled back slightly, her gaze catching the manila folder lying open on the concrete floor. Several yellowed documents had spilled out, stamped with official state seals.
She picked them up.
They were the original Michigan State Police arson investigation records from twenty-five years ago.
“Elias, look at this,” she whispered, skimming through the official conclusions.
Elias looked down, his eyes widening as he read the investigator’s final signatures. “The fire wasn't started by your father. The accelerant used was an industrial solvent exclusive to Crowe Automotive’s central research plant. My father had this building torched to destroy your father’s backup blueprints, and then Victor’s father bribed the local magistrate to frame Robert Barrett.”
The final piece of the thirty-year puzzle had fallen into place.
“Ruth didn't cover it up to protect my father,” Noelle realized, her eyes flashing with cold, hard clarity. “She covered it up to protect her own sons from going to state prison for corporate sabotage and arson.”

Outside, the distant wail of police sirens began to rise through the Detroit night.
Elias stood up, helping Noelle to her feet, his expression turning into cold, unyielding iron. “The hearing is in thirty-six hours. We have the original arson files, the transponder recordings of Vance’s confession, and the legal proof of the patent theft. It’s time to end this war once and for all.”
