Chapter 5 - The Glass Fortress

By Saturday afternoon, the Crowe estate had transformed into a fortress. Private security units patrolled the perimeter fence, while teams of forensic accountants and defense lawyers worked around the clock in the second-floor library, preparing for the Monday morning hearing.
Noelle sat on the plush sofa in Elias’s private study, surrounded by stacks of legal dossiers, old photographs, and detailed timelines of their supposed courtship. Elias had brought her a cup of hot chamomile tea, sitting across from her with his shirtsleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking worn down to the bone.
“We need to establish a believable shared narrative,” Elias explained, tapping a leather-bound notebook. “We claim we met nine months ago at a philanthropic benefit held at the Sterling Grand. We kept the relationship quiet to shield you from the media circus surrounding Crowe Automotive. We got married privately because your mother’s declining health made waiting impossible.”
“It’s a lie, Elias,” Noelle said softly, turning the tea cup between her hands. “A judge will smell the fabrication from twenty paces. Victor’s lawyers will ask where we spent weekends, what we ate for breakfast, what music we listened to while driving along Lake St. Clair.”
Elias leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees, his eyes boring into hers with an intensity that made the breath catch in her throat. “Then let’s stop lying.”
“What do you mean?”
“Tell them the truth about how we feel right now,” he said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. “Tell them that I watched you from my car every Wednesday morning, captivated by how you smiled at the hotel doorman even when the rain was freezing on your coat. Tell them I spent eight months searching for a way to right my father’s sins, only to realize that every single day without you was completely empty.”
Noelle felt a lump rise in her throat, her chest aching with an emotion so powerful it frightened her. “Elias... you can’t just say things like that to pass a legal hearing.”
“I’m not saying it for the hearing,” he answered, reaching out to gently cover her trembling fingers with his warm, calloused palm. “I’m saying it because it’s the only real thing left in this house. My family has lived on stolen glory for thirty years. Being near you is the first time I’ve felt clean.”
Noelle looked down at their joined hands. The sheer weight of his sincerity shattered the remaining walls around her heart. She realized with terrifying certainty that she was falling in love with the son of the man who had destroyed her father.
Later that evening, Noelle couldn't sleep. The mansion was dead silent except for the low moan of the autumn wind through the ancient oaks outside. Needing fresh air, she slipped out of her bedroom and walked down the darkened gallery toward the central conservatory.
As she passed the library, a faint crack of light spilled across the Persian rug. She approached the cracked doorway, intending to tell Elias to get some rest, when she heard a low, agitated voice speaking inside.
She peered through the narrow opening.
Ruth Crowe was standing near the grand marble fireplace, speaking on a secure satellite phone. Her voice was cold, clipped, and devoid of the grandmotherly eccentricity she presented at dinner.
“...he doesn’t know yet,” Ruth was saying into the receiver. “Noelle thinks her father was an innocent victim. If she finds out what really happened in the workshop the night the fire started twenty-five years ago, she’ll destroy both Elias and the company before the hearing even begins. Keep the original police reports locked in the safe-deposit box in Zurich. If Victor gets his hands on them, we’re all ruined.”
Noelle clamped a hand over her mouth to stifle a scream. Her knees turned to water as she backed away from the door, her mind spinning into utter chaos.
What fire? What police reports?

Before she could process the horrifying revelation, a pair of strong hands suddenly grabbed her from behind, a heavy cloth soaked in a sweet, chemical stench pressing violently against her mouth and nose.
Noelle struggled violently, kicking and clawing at her assailant, but the darkness rushed in instantly, pulling her down into a bottomless, terrifying void.
