Chapter 7 - A Trap Set in Velvet

The Grand Horizon Hotel was a glittering palace of marble, gold leaf, and crystal chandeliers that hung like frozen waterfalls from forty-foot ceilings.

Outside, a wall of paparazzi flashes erupted as a fleet of Rolls-Royces and Maybachs arrived under the grand marquee. Inside, the annual Metropol Gala was at full capacity. Over eight hundred of the world's most powerful financiers, foreign diplomats, and corporate titans mingled over flutes of vintage Dom Pérignon, their laughter masking the predatory deals being negotiated in every velvet corner.

When the heavy brass doors opened at 9:15 PM, the room fell into a collective, stunned silence.

Declan Voss entered the grand ballroom.

He was the picture of dark, aristocratic authority in a midnight-black tuxedo, his broad shoulders and commanding presence demanding the attention of every soul in the room. But what truly froze the crowd was the woman on his arm.

Sloane Rafferty was radiant. She wore a bespoke emerald-silk backless gown that hugged every curve with lethal elegance. The Star of Genoa diamond necklace cascaded over her collarbone, catching the brilliant chandeliers and throwing dazzling light against her porcelain skin. Her dark hair was swept into an intricate updo, and her chin was held high with unshakeable confidence.

The room erupted into furious, subdued whispers.

"Is that the girl from the voice note?"

"She called him dangerously attractive and now she’s wearing the Voss family jewels?"

"My God, she looks like royalty..."

Sloane felt the weight of hundreds of eyes, but with Declan’s hand resting securely against the small of her back, she felt invulnerable. He leaned down, his warm breath brushing against her ear.

"You own this room, Miss Rafferty," he murmured, his voice laced with pride. "Remember that."

"I’m just waiting for the main course," she whispered back with a composed smile.

Across the crowded dance floor, standing on the elevated VIP mezzanine, was Victor Vane.

Vane was in his late fifties, silver-haired, with cold, predatory eyes and the refined posture of a man who dealt in blood while wearing silk. Flanking him were four private security guards with concealed weapons. Standing behind him, pale as a ghost and shaking in a borrowed evening gown, was Nadia Chen.

Declan’s fingers tightened slightly against Sloane’s waist.

A discreet vibration buzzed in Declan’s inner ear—the micro-comm unit connected to his private strike team.

"Sir," Dominic’s voice reported smoothly. "The boy is secure. Nadia’s brother was found in a warehouse in Hoboken. Unharmed. We have him at the safehouse."

Declan didn't change his expression, but Sloane felt the tension release from his frame. He leaned toward her. "The brother is safe."

A wave of profound relief washed over Sloane, but she kept her gaze steady, locking eyes with Victor Vane across the ballroom.

"Now," Declan whispered, leading her toward the grand staircase leading to the VIP mezzanine. "Let’s end this."
