Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Vault

By four in the morning, the private subterranean facility was humming with tactical operations.

Sloane’s trace had hit paydirt. Victor Vane wasn't operating from an offshore yacht or a secluded bunker in Europe; he was currently residing in the penthouse suite of the Grand Horizon Hotel on 57th Street—the very same hotel where the annual Manhattan Metropol Gala was scheduled to take place the following evening. Vane had boldly positioned himself in the center of high society, planning to celebrate his hostile takeover of Voss & Crane under the noses of New York’s elite.

Declan ordered his men to secure Marcus in the lower holding cells and led Sloane back into his private underground study—a room lined with rich mahogany, leather-bound ledgers, and a massive walk-in vault set into the reinforced foundation.

"Drink this," Declan said, handing her a porcelain cup of steaming black coffee laced with a hint of cinnamon.

"Thank you," Sloane said, taking the cup with both hands to warm her chilled fingers. She sank into a deep leather armchair, exhaustion finally catching up to her. "What happens now? We have the IP trace, but legally, we can't raid a penthouse on 57th Street without alerting his private security network."

Declan walked over to the vault door, entered a six-digit code on the biometric keypad, and swung the heavy steel open. Inside were rows of velvet-lined cases containing rare historical documents, bearer bonds, and jewelry that looked like it belonged in a royal museum.

"We don't raid it," Declan said, pulling out a slim, velvet jewelry case. "We walk through the front door."

"The Metropol Gala?" Sloane asked, her eyebrows rising. "That’s tomorrow night. The guest list is locked. Alderman Capital bought four executive tables. They’ll expect Marcus, not us."

"Exactly," Declan said, turning around and opening the velvet box.

Inside lay a breathtaking necklace—a cascade of flawless pear-cut diamonds surrounding a deep, hypnotic sapphire the size of a raven's egg. It caught the soft light of the study, throwing dazzling fractals against the dark wood walls.

"This belonged to my grandmother," Declan said quietly, his voice carrying a rare note of reverence. "The Star of Genoa. In our world, an invitation isn't a piece of paper with gold calligraphy. It’s the weight of what you wear and who walks beside you."

He walked over to her chair and held out his hand.

Sloane looked at his outstretched palm, her pulse fluttering. She placed her hand in his, and he gently pulled her up to stand before the tall mirror mounted beside the vault.

"Turn around," he murmured.

Sloane complied, her breath hitching as Declan stepped behind her. His fingers were surprisingly warm and steady as he swept her dark hair over one shoulder. She watched his reflection in the glass—his sharp, aristocratic features softened by an intensity that made her throat dry. He lifted the heavy necklace, draping the cold diamonds against her collarbone, and fastened the clasp at the nape of her neck.

His hands lingered on her bare skin for a beat longer than necessary. His gaze met hers in the mirror, heavy with unspoken promises.

"You called me dangerous, Sloane," he said softly, his voice near her ear.

"You are dangerous," she replied, her voice barely a whisper. "You’re rewriting the rules of a multi-billion-dollar acquisition in an underground bunker before sunrise."

"And yet," Declan said, leaning down so his lips hovered just inches from her temple, "you haven't run away. Why is that?"

Sloane looked at her own reflection—the diamond glittering against her skin, the flush on her cheeks, the unmistakable fire in her eyes. "Because for the first time in two years, Mr. Voss, I’m not just managing your calendar. I’m playing the game with you."

Declan’s hands settled firmly on her waist, turning her around to face him completely. The air between them was electric, thick with the intoxicating friction of power, danger, and undeniable attraction.

"Tomorrow night, the entire city will be watching us," Declan warned, his gray eyes locking onto hers with ruthless possession. "They heard your voice note. They know what you said about me. If you walk into that ballroom on my arm, there’s no turning back. You won't be an anonymous analyst anymore. You’ll be mine in the eyes of every predator in New York."

Sloane tilted her chin up, a daring, reckless smile touching her lips. "Then I suggest you make sure your suit matches my dress, Declan."
