Chapter 6 - The Broken Loyalty

The morning sun rose over Manhattan, but peace was nowhere to be found.
At 8:00 AM, the official corporate servers of Voss & Crane resumed operation. To the outside world, the firm had weathered a minor IT glitch. But internally, the shockwaves were deafening. An official memo had been broadcast to all departments: Marcus Sterling has taken an indefinite leave of absence due to personal restructuring. All active mergers will report directly to Managing Partner Declan Voss and Senior Lead Analyst Sloane Rafferty.
The whispers in the hallways were incandescent.
"She went from an accidental confession to running the merger department in twenty-four hours?" whispered a director in the cafeteria.
"They say Voss didn't fire her because she had leverage," another replied. "Or because the rumors about them were true all along."
Sloane ignored every word. She spent the morning locked in the executive briefing suite with the technical countermeasures team. By noon, she had built a secondary trap within the Harrington documentation—a cryptographic trojan horse designed to trigger the moment Victor Vane attempted to authorize the fraudulent acquisition at the midnight deadline.
However, as Sloane returned to her temporary workstation outside Declan's office, she noticed an anomaly.
Nadia Chen was missing.
Her desk was clear. Her company laptop was logged off, and her phone was sitting unattended on top of a notepad. On the notepad, written in hurried, trembling handwriting, was a single sentence:
*Sloane, they have my brother. Don't go to the gala.*
Sloane felt a spike of ice plunge into her stomach.
She grabbed the notepad and burst into Declan’s office without knocking. Declan was on a secure satellite call with his Swiss banking proxies, but the moment he saw the look on her face, he hung up immediately.
"What happened?"
"Nadia," Sloane said, handing him the paper. "Her younger brother is a sophomore at Columbia. Someone took him. They’re using her to breach the security perimeter at the gala tonight."
Declan’s expression darkened into an abyss of pure fury. "Victor Vane’s signature move. When he realizes his insider is compromised, he strikes at the support staff to force a breach."
"Declan, we have to help her!" Sloane insisted, her voice tight with panic. "Nadia didn't choose this. She’s my friend. She covered for me when my mother died, she helped me survive this cutthroat firm. If anything happens to her—"
Declan caught Sloane by the wrists, holding her steady. His grip was firm, grounding her spiraling terror with unshakeable authority. "Look at me, Sloane. Look at me."
She looked up into his fierce gray eyes.
"No one who is under my protection gets left behind," Declan promised, each word weighted with iron. "Vane thinks he’s executing a hostage play. He thinks this will force us to forfeit the Harrington data. But all he’s done is make this personal."
He pulled out his private cell phone, dialing a single-digit speed dial.
"Dominic," Declan spoke into the receiver. "Activate Team Alpha. Deploy surveillance to the Columbia campus perimeter. I want the sister’s apartment swept, cell towers triangulated, and every black Mercedes registered to Vane’s security fronts intercepted before 6:00 PM. Bring the boy to the safehouse. And find Nadia."

He hung up, slipping the phone back into his pocket.
"We are still going to that gala," Declan told her, his voice quiet, lethal, and utterly resolved. "Because while Vane thinks he holds the cards, we’re going to walk into his territory and dismantle his entire empire piece by piece."
