Chapter 5 - Vesper’s Arrival And The Legal Counterattack

The digital clock on my laptop read 10:45 A.M. Outside my apartment window, the city was moving at its usual frantic pace, but inside, the room was charged with the quiet, terrifying efficiency of a military command center. Vesper had set up a second monitor on my dining table, connecting our encrypted communication lines to a network of corporate legal associates and cyber-forensic specialists.
"We have two distinct vectors of attack," Vesper said, pacing the length of the small room with a tablet in her hand. "Vector one: the unauthorized wire transfer. We have the digital logs, the IP address traces showing the transaction originated from your father's home router while you were asleep, and the official invoice issued by the Grand Meridian Resort listing your corporate entity as the primary billing party. That's open-and-shut corporate embezzlement and wire fraud."
"And vector two?" I asked, resting my hands on the armrests of my wheelchair.
"Vector two is the video footage of the assault," Vesper smiled, a sharp, humorless expression. "Sent to us anonymously by cousin Briany—who apparently has finally realized that hitching her wagon to Sutton's sinking ship is a losing game. That video, combined with your medical records detailing the catastrophic failure of your surgical implants, gives us enough leverage to completely dismantle your family's social standing before the afternoon reception even begins."
I nodded slowly, feeling a profound sense of calm washing over me. For years, I had allowed my family to define my worth based on how much I could endure, how many bills I could quietly pay, and how easily I could be pushed into the background. No more.
"I want the legal notices served directly to the venue," I instructed, my voice unwavering. "I don't want to wait until Monday. Today is the day of the main wedding ceremony. If Sutton wants a grand spectacle, I'm going to give her a show she will never, ever forget."
Vesper tapped her tablet enthusiastically. "Consider it done. I've already dispatched a high-tier process server accompanied by local law enforcement officers to deliver the freeze-assets injunction directly to the resort's financial director. Furthermore, our cyber team has prepared an encrypted data packet containing the assault video and the fraudulent wire transfer receipts, ready to be dropped simultaneously to all major local news outlets and the wedding's official live-stream feed at exactly 2:00 P.M.—right when the ceremony is scheduled to begin."
"What about Alden?" I asked, thinking of the groom who had walked out of the rehearsal dinner the previous night after witnessing the brutal push.
"Alden checked out of the resort at 5:00 A.M. this morning," Vesper replied, pulling up a hotel manifest log. "He didn't stay in his bridal suite. But according to our sources, he hasn't left Westchester yet. In fact, he's requested a private meeting with a legal representative to discuss the legal ramifications of marrying into a family currently facing criminal investigation."

"Contact him," I said immediately. "Tell him we have the unedited footage of what happened on those stairs. If he wants out of this toxic circus with his own reputation intact, we can offer him a clean exit strategy."
Vesper grinned, dialing her phone. " Fallon, I always knew you had a ruthless streak hidden under all that patience. It's about damn time you unleashed it."
