Chapter 4 - The Sound of the Cane

Before Daniel could reach the climax of his revised pitch, a heavy, resonant sound echoed from the far end of the foyer—the slow, rhythmic thunk of wood striking imported Italian marble.

Thunk. Thunk. Thunk.

The entire room paused. Daniel’s mouth remained half-open, a rehearsed corporate buzzword dying on his lips. Margaret’s smug smile instantly vanished, replaced by a sudden, rigid expression of profound panic. Vanessa dropped her hand from her face, her eyes widening as she stared toward the massive oak doors of the entryway.

The heavy doors swung open, pushed inward with slow, deliberate force.

Standing beneath the towering archway was an elderly man leaning heavily on an ebony cane with a silver wolf-head handle. He wore a charcoal cashmere overcoat draped over his shoulders like a cape, and his silver hair was combed back with austere precision. His eyes, pale and piercing, swept across the room with the unyielding authority of an apex predator returning to his domain.

Arthur Whitmore.

The founder of Whitmore Meridian Group. The patriarch whose portrait hung in oil above the central staircase and whose signature was stamped on contracts worth billions across three continents.

For nearly two years, Arthur had been living in virtual seclusion in a private clinic and chalet in Switzerland, recovering from complex heart surgery. The family board had received regular medical bulletins stating he was too frail to travel, too weak to engage in corporate affairs, and entirely dependent on round-the-clock nursing care. Christmas was the earliest projected date for his return, and even that was considered optimistic.

Not tonight. Not without a single word of warning. And certainly not accompanied by an imposing, gray-haired man in a tailored charcoal suit carrying a thick leather briefcase—an attorney whose piercing expression signaled that he was not there for a social visit.

Daniel froze, the color completely draining from his face until he looked like a corpse under the studio lighting.

“Granddad?” Daniel choked out, his voice cracking slightly on the final syllable. “What… what are you doing here? We were told you weren't cleared to fly!”

May you like

Arthur did not answer him. He didn’t even look in Daniel’s direction.

Instead, the old man’s piercing gaze swept across the crowded room until it landed squarely on Claire. He looked at the silver tray trembling in her hands. He looked at the plain, humiliating black dress designed to make her look like part of the catering staff. Then he looked at Margaret, whose hands were now gripping the back of a velvet chair so tightly her knuckles were stark white. Finally, his eyes returned to Daniel, hardening into glacial fury.
