Chapter 15 - The Betrayal in the ElevatorVanessa Whitmore called Claire at 10:38 that night.

“I have something.”
Claire was still at Mercer Holdings with Noah and Olivia.
“What?”
“Daniel contacted me.”
Claire immediately activated recording software.
“What did he say?”
“He wants to meet.”
“Where?”
“The Langford Hotel tomorrow at noon.”
Noah mouthed, Take it.
Claire nodded.
“Why you?”
“Because he thinks I’m still angry at you.”
“Aren’t you?”
Vanessa was silent.
Then she gave a humorless laugh.
“I was.”
That answer surprised Claire.
Vanessa continued.
“When Granddad came back, I hated you. Daniel lost everything. Mom blamed you. Our friends whispered about us. I thought you had destroyed my family.”
“And now?”
“Now I know Daniel stole records and handed them to Victor Sloane.”
Claire waited.
Vanessa whispered, “I don’t know who my brother is anymore.”
The next morning, federal investigators equipped Vanessa with a recording device.
Claire watched from a surveillance vehicle half a block from the Langford.
Noah sat beside her.
“You don’t have to be here.”
“Yes, I do.”
At 12:04, Daniel entered the hotel lobby.
Claire barely recognized him.
He had lost weight.
His expensive suit hung more loosely across his shoulders.
He kept looking behind him.
Vanessa met him near the elevators.
Their microphones transmitted clearly.
Daniel hugged her.
Then immediately asked, “Did Claire call the FBI?”
Vanessa hesitated.
“I don’t know.”
“You always know.”
They entered an elevator.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Sloane wants the original ledger.”
“Why?”
“Because the copy isn’t enough.”
“What’s in it?”
“I don’t know.”
Claire frowned.
Daniel continued.
“Mom stole it, but half the pages were coded. Sloane said Jonathan kept another key somewhere.”
Vanessa asked, “Did you fake the guarantee?”
“No.”
Daniel sounded genuinely offended.
“I leaked it. I didn’t create it.”
Claire looked at Noah.
That distinction mattered.
Vanessa said, “You ruined Claire’s company.”
“I wanted people to see she wasn’t perfect.”
The words hit Claire harder than she expected.
Not because they were cruel.
Because they were pathetic.
Daniel had risked thousands of jobs simply to scratch her reputation.
The elevator stopped.
Then Daniel said something that changed everything.
“Sloane promised me Granddad’s company back.”
Vanessa froze.
“What?”
“He said once Mercer collapsed, Whitmore Meridian’s stock would fall too. He’d provide bridge financing. I’d return as CEO after restructuring.”
Claire stared at the monitor.
Daniel had not merely wanted revenge.
He had planned a corporate takeover.
Vanessa whispered, “Daniel, that’s insane.”
“No. It was supposed to be clean.”
“Was?”
Daniel looked toward the elevator camera.
His face changed.
Fear.
“He’s doing things I didn’t agree to.”
“What things?”
Daniel stepped closer to Vanessa.
“Tell Mom to leave the country.”
Claire’s breath caught.
“Why?”
“Sloane knows she talked.”
Vanessa’s voice trembled.
“Talked about what?”
Daniel stared at her.
Then the elevator doors opened.
He grabbed her arm before she could leave.
“Granddad is in danger.”
Claire immediately reached for her phone.
Vanessa whispered, “What are you talking about?”
Daniel’s eyes darted toward the lobby.
“Sloane thinks Arthur knows where Jonathan’s original evidence is.”
“How would Arthur know?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel released her.
“But Sloane does.”
Vanessa asked the question Claire was already thinking.
“How?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then he whispered, “Because Granddad was with Jonathan the night before the plane crash.”
Claire went completely still.
Arthur had told her they were together in London on August seventeenth.
He had never said anything about the night before her parents died.
Daniel turned away.
Vanessa followed.
“Daniel!”
He stopped.
“Where are you going?”
“To fix this.”
“How?”
Daniel looked back at his sister.
For the first time, Claire did not see arrogance in his face.
She saw terror.
“I’m going to tell Sloane I’m done.”
Noah cursed under his breath.
Claire grabbed her phone.
Daniel walked toward the hotel exit.
A black sedan pulled up outside.
He climbed in.
The federal surveillance team moved.
But traffic swallowed the sedan within seconds.
Claire called Arthur.
No answer.
She called his house.
No answer.
His driver answered on the third attempt.
“Ms. Mercer?”
“Where is Arthur?”
“I thought he was with you.”
Claire stood.
“What?”
“He canceled his afternoon medical appointment. Said you sent a car.”
Claire’s face went cold.
“I did not send a car.”
Noah was already moving.
“When did he leave?”
The driver answered.
“Twenty minutes ago.”
Claire closed her eyes.
For one horrible moment, she was seventeen again.
Waiting for adults to explain why her parents were never coming home.

Then she opened them.
“Find Arthur.”
