Chapter 17 - The False SignatureAt 2:11 the following morning, Noah woke Claire on the conference-room sofa.

“We have the forensic report.”

She sat up immediately.

Olivia was asleep in a chair nearby.

Marcus stood beside a forensic document specialist named Dr. Rebecca Sloan—no relation to Victor.

Rebecca spread enlarged images across the table.

“Jonathan Mercer’s signature is genuine.”

Claire’s stomach dropped.

Rebecca held up one finger.

“But the agreement isn’t.”

Claire leaned closer.

Rebecca explained that the signature page had originally belonged to another contract.

The paper matched the period.

The ink matched Jonathan’s known signing instruments.

The signature itself had almost certainly been written by him.

However, microscopic pressure patterns revealed the page had once been bound differently.

Someone removed it from an authentic contract and inserted it into the Meridian guarantee package.

“So the signature was transplanted,” Noah said.

“Physically, yes.”

Claire looked at page seventeen.

“What about the guarantee language?”

“Printed years later.”

Olivia had awakened.

“How much later?”

Rebecca looked at her notes.

“At least nine years.”

That changed everything.

The supposed fourteen-year-old guarantee had been manufactured within the last five years.

Daniel’s involvement suddenly looked worse.

Claire asked, “Can we prove who created it?”

“Not yet.”

Marcus entered carrying his tablet.

“We may have another problem.”

He displayed building-camera footage from Arthur’s townhouse.

The car that collected Arthur was a black Lincoln registered to a private transportation company.

Fake reservation.

Fake customer name.

But one traffic camera captured the driver.

Claire did not recognize him.

Margaret did.

“Oh my God.”

“Who?” Claire asked.

“Peter Harlan.”

The name meant nothing to Claire.

Arthur’s former chief financial officer.

Harlan had retired twelve years earlier and moved to Florida.

Or supposedly moved to Florida.

Margaret sat down slowly.

“He worked with Arthur and Jonathan.”

Noah began searching government records.

“Peter Harlan is seventy-four.”

Margaret shook her head.

“He was also one of the few people who had full access to Whitmore Meridian’s international accounts.”

Claire remembered Jonathan’s warning.

Someone inside Whitmore Meridian had helped Victor Sloane.

“Where is Harlan now?”

Marcus answered.

“His Florida residence was sold eight years ago. His official mailing address is a law office in Delaware.”

“Find him.”

“We are.”

Claire looked again at the forged agreement.

A genuine Jonathan Mercer signature.

Historical Whitmore records.

A retired CFO.

Victor Sloane.

The conspiracy had survived fourteen years because pieces were scattered across different families and companies.

Nobody had ever assembled them.

Until now.

At 3:04, Vanessa called.

Her voice was frantic.

“I got a message from Daniel.”

“What message?”

Vanessa forwarded it.

Claire opened the attached photograph.

Arthur sat in a wooden chair inside a warehouse.

He did not appear seriously injured.

But his hands were bound.

Beside him stood Daniel.

Claire’s heart slammed against her ribs.

The text beneath the photograph contained six words.

BRING THE BLUE LEDGER. COME ALONE.

Vanessa started crying.

“My brother kidnapped him.”

Noah studied the image.

“No.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

“Look at Daniel’s left hand.”

Claire enlarged the photograph.

Daniel’s wrist was secured to a steel pipe behind him.

He was restrained too.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel had not kidnapped Arthur.

Someone had taken both men.

Another message arrived.

MIDNIGHT TOMORROW.

Noah immediately contacted the federal team.

Claire kept staring at the photograph.

Arthur looked directly into the camera.

His right hand rested awkwardly against his leg.

Two fingers extended.

Then three.

Then one.

Claire zoomed closer.

“Wait.”

Noah leaned in.

“What?”

“He’s signaling.”

Arthur had taught Claire card games when she was young.

He used finger numbers when cheating playfully with her against Jonathan.

Two.

Three.

One.

Claire searched the warehouse image.

On the back wall, barely visible beneath peeling paint, was a shipping logo.

MERIDIAN TERMINAL STORAGE.

Olivia began typing.

“There were nineteen Meridian storage facilities in the Northeast.”

“Which one has building 231?”

Thirty seconds later, she found it.

An abandoned freight complex in Newark.

Warehouse 231.

Claire stood.

“We know where he is.”

Noah blocked her path.

“The FBI handles this.”

“I’m going.”

“No.”

“Arthur is there because of my father’s evidence.”

“And if you walk into an active hostage situation, you become another hostage.”

Claire stared at him.

He did not move.

That irritated her.

It also reminded her why Arthur had written two words in his letter.

Trust Noah.

Claire finally nodded.

“Fine.”

Noah looked surprised.

“I’m still going to Newark.”

“Claire.”

“I didn’t say inside.”

Olivia muttered, “Progress.”

Claire ignored her.

At 3:19 a.m., federal agents began planning the rescue.

And eighty miles away, inside an abandoned warehouse, Arthur Whitmore sat beside the grandson who had betrayed him.

For the first time in his life, Daniel had nobody left to impress.

No investors.

No family audience.

No expensive title.

Only an old man he had disappointed and the possibility that neither of them would leave alive.

Arthur turned his head slightly.

Daniel whispered, “Granddad.”

Arthur looked at him.

Daniel’s eyes filled with shame.

“I’m sorry.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“You will have plenty of time to be sorry.”

Daniel swallowed.

“If we get out.”

Arthur looked toward the dark warehouse door.

“No.”

May you like

His voice remained steady.

“When.”
