Chapter 9 - The Unwritten Clause

Evelyn’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked up into Cole’s intense, searching eyes, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

“You said you wanted to destroy Grant Holloway,” she whispered, her hands gripping the strap of her purse. “You said you needed a partner inside Mercer Freight to void his covenants. You got everything you wanted.”

“I lied,” Cole said.

The confession was so quiet, so raw, that it hung suspended in the vast expanse of the penthouse like a striking match in the dark.

Evelyn stared at him. “What?”

Cole closed the remaining distance between them, his presence overwhelming her senses. He reached out, his warm, strong hand gently cupping the side of her face. His thumb brushed softly across her cheekbone, making her shiver.

“I didn't come to the Marlowe Hotel to serve Grant with an audit notice,” Cole confessed, his voice thick with emotion. “I had process servers for that. I came because I had spent three weeks reviewing your father’s files. I spent three weeks looking at pictures of you, reading your background, watching how you fought tooth and nail to protect your dockworkers while your own family betrayed you.”

Evelyn’s lips parted in shock. “Cole...”

“I came to that party to see if you were really as brave as you seemed,” Cole continued, his gray eyes burning with an honesty that took her breath away. “And then, before I could even introduce myself, you walked up to me in that silver dress. You looked into my eyes with sheer terror and unyielding courage, and you kissed me like you were drowning and I was the shore.”

A tear finally escaped Evelyn’s eye, trailing down her cheek onto Cole’s fingers. He gently wiped it away with his thumb.

“That night in the ballroom,” Cole murmured, leaning in until his lips were inches from hers, “the moment your hands touched my lapels, the business stopped mattering. Destroying Grant became secondary. My only obsession became protecting you. Keeping you safe. Putting a ring on your finger so that no man on this earth could ever threaten you or use you again.”

“Cole... our marriage was a contract,” she cried softly, her voice trembling. “It was supposed to be fake. A six-month arrangement to fool the press!”

“There was never anything fake about it for me,” Cole said fiercely. He took the legal divorce folder from the console table and tore it down the middle with a sharp, violent rip. He let the shredded papers flutter to the floor between them like snow.

“I don’t want a business partner, Evelyn,” he whispered, his forehead resting gently against hers, his breath warm against her lips. “I don’t want six months. I want fifty years. I want to wake up next to you every single morning. I want to build a life with you. I fell in love with you the second you kissed me under those chandeliers, and I have spent every waking minute since terrified that you would realize I’m just an arrogant brute who doesn't deserve you.”

Evelyn laughed through her tears—a bright, beautiful sound that broke the heavy tension of the room. She dropped her purse, wrapping her arms around his neck, burying her face into the curve of his throat.

“You idiot,” she sobbed softly against his skin. “You absolute idiot.”

Cole stiffened slightly, pulling back to look at her, a rare look of panic in his eyes. “Evelyn?”

“I packed those bags because I thought you didn't love me!” she said, looking straight into his winter-gray eyes with pure, radiant adoration. “I thought I was just a pawn in your war for Clara. I thought you were letting me go because the job was done!”

Cole stared at her, stunned, before a slow, dazzling smile broke across his rugged features—the most beautiful thing Evelyn had ever seen.

“Let you go?” Cole growled softly, his hands sliding down to her waist, lifting her effortlessly off her feet until she was level with him. “I will never let you go, Evelyn Maddox. Not in this lifetime.”

He pulled her down into a kiss that stole whatever air was left in her lungs. It was deep, possessive, and overflowing with all the unsaid words, the hidden fears, and the fierce devotion that had built between them from the very first second their lips had met. Evelyn clung to him, opening up to his warmth, knowing with absolute certainty that she had finally found her home.
