Chapter 2 - The Predator’s Shadow

The silence in the grand ballroom felt like a drawn bowstring. Cameras flashed from the perimeter, capturing Evelyn holding the predatory contract while standing directly in the shadow of Cole Maddox. Every socialite in the room understood the implications. Mercer Freight was not just breaking a merger; they were declaring war.

Grant reached out aggressively, his composure shattering. “Give me that paper, Evelyn. You have no legal standing to display private business covenants in public!”

Before Grant’s fingers could brush Evelyn’s bare arm, Cole’s hand snapped forward. He caught Grant by the wrist with terrifying speed. There was no theatrical struggle. Just a clean, vice-like grip that brought Grant up on the tips of his Italian leather shoes.

“Don’t touch her,” Cole said quietly. The tone was conversational, yet it carried an underlying menace that made the surrounding guests take a collective step back. “She told you no. In my world, no means you walk away before someone teaches you how to limp.”

Grant gasped, wincing against the pressure. “Maddox... this is between me and my fiancée. You don’t have jurisdiction here. You don’t own Mercer Freight.”

“Not yet,” Cole replied with a dangerous smile. He released Grant with a sharp flick that sent the smaller man stumbling against a champagne tower. Crystal stems wobbled, two flutes crashing to the floor with sharp cracks that echoed like gunshots.

Cole turned his back on Grant entirely, offering his arm to Evelyn. “Let’s go, Miss Mercer. The air in here is turning sour.”

Dazed, her heart hammering against her ribs, Evelyn slipped her trembling fingers into the crook of his elbow. His suit jacket was heavy, the fabric expensive beyond measure, and his frame radiated steady warmth. As they walked through the parted crowd, she could hear the frenzied whispers.

“Is that really Cole Maddox?”

“The hedge fund titan from Chicago? I thought he swore he’d never return to New York.”

“Holloway Holdings borrowed forty million from his firm last winter... Grant is dead.”

Evelyn filed the information away, her mind racing. She had pulled a stunt to humiliate Grant Holloway and break the wedding contract publicly enough that he couldn't sweep it under the rug. She had expected to kiss an anonymous guest, cause a scandal, and slip out into a waiting taxi. Instead, she had grabbed a kraken sleeping beneath the waves of Wall Street.

They passed through the towering brass doors of the Marlowe Hotel and into the crisp autumn night. Valets scrambled as a sleek, midnight-black Maybach pulled smoothly up to the curb without being summoned. The driver stepped out instantly, opening the rear door with military precision.

“Get in,” Cole instructed gently, holding the door for her.

Evelyn hesitated on the sidewalk, the cold wind whipping her silver skirt around her calves. “I don’t even know you, Mr. Maddox. I used you in there to escape a monster. That doesn’t mean I’m climbing into a car with another one.”

Cole looked down at her, his winter-gray eyes reflecting the neon lights of the city. For the first time, a genuine trace of humor touched his rugged features. “Miss Mercer, Grant Holloway is a street thug who bought a tuxedo. If I were the monster you fear, you wouldn’t have made it out of that ballroom alive. Your father’s debt expires at midnight on Friday. You have four days before Holloway seizes your docks. Do you want to stand on this sidewalk and freeze, or do you want to save your family’s legacy?”

Evelyn bit her lip. She had nothing left to lose. Gathering her silver gown, she stepped into the leather sanctuary of the limousine. Cole slid in beside her, and the door sealed shut with a heavy, soundproof thud. As the car surged into the New York traffic, Evelyn glanced out the tinted rear window. Grant Holloway was standing under the Marlowe’s marquee, his phone pressed to his ear, his face twisted in utter fury.

“Where are you taking me?” Evelyn demanded, smoothing her gown.

“My penthouse,” Cole said, pulling a tablet from the console. “Where we can discuss the price of your kiss.”
