Chapter 3 - The Secret Unveiled

The courtroom fell into a shocked, suffocating hush. My mother’s hand froze midway to her face, her fake tears drying up in an instant. Her jaw practically dropped to the collar of her expensive coat as she stared at me with wide, horrified eyes.
“Your Honor?” Richard stammered, half-rising from his chair before Vance frantically tugged him back down. “There must be some kind of clerical error! Caroline doesn't work for the Navy! She’s an office assistant! She files mail! She lives in cheap apartments and refuses to build a real career!”
Judge Harrison’s gavel struck the sound block with a deafening crack that made both of my parents jump out of their skin.
“Mr. Bennett, you will control yourself in my courtroom, or your next seat will be in a holding cell for contempt!” the judge warned, his voice booming with authority. He turned his attention back to me, softening his tone. “Proceed, Ms. Bennett.”
I stood up, shoulders back, spine straight, projecting the command presence I had cultivated over twelve years of military trials, overseas deployments, and rigorous legal scrutiny.
“That is correct, Your Honor,” I replied, my voice steady, resonant, and calm. “I graduated magna cum laude from law school, completed Naval Officer Candidate School, and have served as a JAG attorney for the past decade. For security reasons and due to my assignment handling sensitive administrative investigations and international maritime law, my service records are classified and maintained under Department of Defense personnel protocols.”
Judge Harrison nodded slowly, looking down at the credentials again. “I see here that you have received two Navy Commendation Medals, have overseen complex federal litigation, and currently hold a top-secret clearance. Yet your parents have filed a sworn statement under penalty of perjury asserting that you are an unemployed, mentally unstable drifter incapable of managing personal finances.”
The judge turned his icy gaze directly toward Jonathan Vance and my parents. Vance looked as though all the blood had drained completely from his face. A seasoned lawyer knows when he has walked into an ambush, and Vance had just realized his entire strategy of portraying me as an incompetent, predatory slacker was completely in ruins.
“M-Mr. Vance,” Judge Harrison said, his voice dangerously low. “Did you perform any due diligence whatsoever before asserting that respondent Bennett was an incompetent derelict in a sworn court pleading?”
Vance nervously tugged at his collar, his face turning an alarming shade of crimson. “Your Honor... my clients assured me... based on their personal family knowledge... that Ms. Bennett had no formal professional licensing or assets...”
“Because you never asked!” I broke in, keeping my eyes fixed forward. “For ten years, you never once asked where I lived, what I did, or how my life was going. Every Thanksgiving, every rare holiday you deigned to acknowledge my presence, your only words were insults about my modesty. You assumed that because I drove a dependable sedan, lived within my means, and refused to beg for your approval, that I was a failure. You never knew who I was because you never cared to look.”
Diane’s face burned with sudden shame, but Richard’s arrogant stubbornness refused to break. He leaned forward aggressively, gripping the edge of the table.
“Even if that's true!” Richard barked, his voice cracking with desperation. “Even if she’s some military lawyer, it doesn’t change the fundamental law! Eleanor was an old, feeble woman! A granddaughter has no right to jump ahead of the legal surviving son! That money was generated by the Bennett family legacy! It belongs to me!”
“Does it, Mr. Bennett?” Judge Harrison asked quietly, raising a single eyebrow.
The judge flipped to the second section of the sealed folder, pulling out a thick sheaf of notarized accounting records and bank statements that had been sealed under Eleanor’s personal trust.
“It seems Eleanor Bennett anticipated this exact hearing,” Judge Harrison said, his eyes scanning the ledger. “And she left a very thorough, notarized explanation detailing why she deliberately chose to exclude you and your wife from her estate. In fact, she included six years of forensic accounting records regarding the ‘Bennett family legacy’ you so proudly mention.”

The color began to fade from Richard’s face, replaced by a sickly, gray pallor. Beside him, my mother’s eyes widened in genuine terror. She reached out and grabbed Richard’s arm with fingers that were visibly shaking.
“Your Honor,” Rebecca said smoothly, stepping forward. “We ask the court to examine Exhibit B. It details the unauthorized draining of Eleanor Bennett’s private accounts between 2018 and 2023—orchestrated entirely by Richard and Diane Bennett.”
