Chapter 9 - The Fall of Victoria Sterling

The media frenzy broke before the gala even concluded.
By midnight, headlines across the country's major news outlets were exploding across social media:
*“Billionaire Nathan Hayes Exposes Decades of Fashion Theft at St. Jude Charity Gala!”*
*“The Real Cinderella: Dry Cleaner Heiress Wears Stolen Legacy Gown to High-Society Ball!”*
*“Sterling Empire Crumbling Amidst Embezzlement Arrests and Fashion Fraud!”*
Within forty-eight hours, the Sterling brand collapsed entirely under the weight of federal investigations and corporate cancellations. Department stores across the globe pulled their merchandise from the shelves. Victoria’s husband filed for divorce, liquidating assets to pay off debts, while Victoria found herself facing multiple counts of wire fraud and grand larceny. The woman who had sneered at a fourteen-dollar bank account was now staring down millions in restitution and the complete destruction of her social standing.
Meanwhile, on Monday morning, the bell above the door of Lexton Dry Cleaners chimed softly.
Mr. Lexton looked up from his ledger, his glasses sliding down his nose. The tiny, humid shop was completely surrounded by television broadcast vans, floral arrangements, and dozens of high-fashion representatives holding portfolios.
Grace walked in through the front door, wearing her simple jeans and warm wool sweater, holding Ella’s hand.
"Grace!" Mr. Lexton cried out, coming out from behind the counter with tears in his eyes. He pointed toward the television mounted in the corner, which was currently playing footage of Grace descending the grand staircase in her midnight velvet gown. "The whole city is talking about you! Fashion houses from Paris, Milan, and Tokyo have been calling this counter all morning! They want to buy Clara's designs! They want to meet you!"
Grace smiled warmly, walking behind the counter and giving the old man a tight hug. "Thank you for everything, Mr. Lexton. You gave me a job when no one else would."
"You don't belong behind this steam press, Grace," Mr. Lexton said, patting her shoulder with pride. "Your mother was a queen, and you have her blood. Go build what was stolen from you."
Before Grace could reply, the door opened again. Nathan Hayes walked in, dressed in a simple dark coat, holding Logan’s hand.
The little boy immediately ran over to Ella, holding up a brand-new box of colored sketching pencils. "Look what my dad got us! We can draw new dresses together!"
Ella beamed, grabbing the pencils and leading Logan over to the waiting bench by the window.
Nathan walked up to the counter, his eyes warm and filled with unspoken admiration.
"The Sterling conglomerate's fashion division has officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this morning," Nathan said quietly. "The board has voted to liquidate all original intellectual properties back to their rightful owners."
He slid a heavy legal folder across the scarred steel counter.
"Clara Bennett's name has been legally restored to every design in The Starlight Collection," Nathan continued. "Along with twenty-two million dollars in back-royalties held in escrow. Furthermore, the board has authorized the creation of a new independent design house: The House of Bennett."
Grace stared down at the documents, her eyes filling with tears. She touched her mother’s name printed clearly in black ink across the top of the state register.
"I don't know how to run a fashion empire, Nathan," Grace whispered, looking up at him honestly. "I only know how to sew, how to cut, and how to survive."

Nathan reached out, his warm, strong hand gently covering hers over the paperwork.
"You already know the most important part, Grace," Nathan said softly. "You know how to put your soul into your work, and you know how to stand tall when the world tries to push you down. I can handle the business. I want to partner with you. Not just for your mother's legacy... but for yours."
