Chapter 7 - The Billionaire Steps Up

Nathan descended the stairs slowly, each step measured, deliberate, and resonant. The security guards immediately snapped to attention, stepping back three paces and lowering their heads in deference.

Victoria’s arrogant smirk instantly evaporated, replaced by a wide, nervous smile that failed to reach her panicked eyes. "Nathan! Oh, thank goodness you're here. This woman was causing a disturbance, trying to pretend she was invited to the foundation's private gala. I was just having security handle it for you."

Nathan reached the ballroom floor. He did not spare Victoria a single glance.

Instead, he walked directly up to Grace. In front of five hundred elite guests, the city's press corps, and the most influential power brokers in the state, Nathan Hayes bowed his head slightly with absolute respect.

"Good evening, Grace," Nathan said softly, his voice carrying warmth that made the surrounding crowd murmur in shock. "You look stunning. Clara would have been extraordinarily proud."

Grace stared at him, her breath hitching. "You... you knew my mother?"

Nathan turned back toward the room, his eyes scanning the frozen faces of the elite until they landed like heavy iron weights onto Victoria Sterling.

"Grace Bennett is here tonight as my personal guest of honor," Nathan announced, his voice vibrating through the crystal chandeliers. "Her tickets were issued directly from my personal allocation. And anyone who insults her, insults the Hayes Foundation."

A pin could have dropped on the carpet and sounded like thunder.

Victoria’s mouth opened and closed soundlessly, her face draining of all color. "Your guest? Nathan, she... she’s an ironer! She washes shirts! Why would you invite a common laborer to our charity gala?"

Nathan stepped toward Victoria, his towering height casting a long shadow over her emerald dress.

"Because that 'common laborer' possesses more integrity, artistry, and grace in her little finger than your entire family has demonstrated in three generations," Nathan said coldly. "And because it is high time this city learned the truth about where the Sterling family’s so-called fashion fortune actually came from."

Whispers erupted like wildfire. Guests leaned in, reporters near the rope edged their microphones closer, and Victoria took an involuntary step backward, suddenly looking terrified.

"Nathan, please," Victoria stammered, her voice shaking. "Whatever personal issues we have—"

"This isn't personal, Victoria. It's historical," Nathan interrupted, turning his back on her to address the entire assembly. "Thirty years ago, Victoria's father, Marcus Sterling, launched his luxury fashion empire with a line called The Starlight Collection. It won international design awards in Paris and Milan. It generated over eighty million dollars and established the Sterling name in high society."

Nathan paused, his eyes resting gently on Grace.

"What Marcus Sterling never told the press was that every single sketch, every pattern, and every stitch of that collection was created by an immigrant master seamstress named Clara Vane Bennett. Marcus bought her silence with ironclad NDAs and pocketed the glory while Clara died penniless in a public hospital."

The room erupted into shocked gasps. Several elderly board members who had known Marcus Sterling exchanged horrified glances.

"That's a lie!" Victoria shrieked, her voice turning shrill and hysterical. "My father was a genius! You have no proof of these slanderous accusations!"

Nathan smiled—a cold, razor-sharp smile.

"I run the largest intellectual property firm in North America, Victoria," Nathan replied smoothly. "And three days ago, after meeting Grace at our children's school, I finally had my legal team open the private archives my late father kept before he passed. We found the original patent transfers, the bank ledgers, and the signed correspondence proving Marcus Sterling stole Clara’s entire body of work."

Nathan gestured toward Grace’s breathtaking gown.

"Look at her dress, ladies and gentlemen. That is the true, unreleased finale of The Starlight Collection, sewn by Clara's daughter from Clara’s original hand-drawn sketches. You are looking at the rightful heir to the Sterling design empire."
