Chapter 10 - A Stitch in Time

One year later.

The marquee outside the Metropolitan Design Center in Manhattan glowed with an elegant script that read:

**THE HOUSE OF BENNETT — THE INAUGURAL AUTUMN SHOWCASE.**

The hall was packed to capacity with international critics, fashion luminaries, and philanthropists from around the world. But unlike the cold, exclusive galas of the past, the front three rows were filled with the garment workers, pressers, and tailors of New York City, each invited with full VIP honors by Grace herself.

Mr. Lexton sat proudly in the front row, wearing a bespoke suit tailored personally by Grace, dabbing his eyes with a silk handkerchief.

Backstage, the air buzzed with excited energy. Grace walked down the line of models, making final adjustments to the hems and necklines of her debut collection. The garments were a stunning evolution of Clara’s vision—flowing silks, architectural velvets, and embroidery that celebrated the strength, labor, and beauty of everyday women.

"Two minutes to curtain, Ms. Bennett," the stage manager called out.

Grace took a deep breath, looking at her reflection in the full-length mirror. She wore a tailored ivory tuxedo suit, sharp and feminine, her grandmother’s silver thimble hanging from a delicate gold chain around her neck.

"Mom!" Ella’s voice chirped happily.

Ella bounded through the backstage curtain, wearing a bright sapphire silk dress with silver ribbons. Behind her walked Nathan and Logan, both looking handsome in matching tailored charcoal suits.

Nathan walked up to Grace, his eyes shining with profound pride and deep, unwavering love. Over the past year, their partnership in business had naturally blossomed into an unbreakable bond of mutual respect, trust, and romance. They were no longer two wounded souls navigating a cold city alone; they were a family.

"Are you ready for your moment, Grace?" Nathan asked, resting his hands gently on her waist.

"I’m ready," Grace smiled, leaning up to kiss his cheek. "Thank you for believing in me before anyone else saw the truth."

"I only saw what was already there," Nathan replied softly. "You just needed the world to get out of your way."

The lights in the main auditorium dimmed. The crowd grew silent.

The music began—a sweeping, emotional orchestral piece that filled the cavernous hall with resonance and power. The curtains parted, and the first model stepped onto the runway, draped in a magnificent cape of midnight velvet that caught the spotlights like the night sky.

The crowd erupted into spontaneous, thunderous applause that shook the rafters.

Grace stood backstage with Nathan’s arm around her shoulder, Ella and Logan holding hands beside them, watching the beauty unfold on the stage. She reached into her pocket and touched the worn, folded letter from Clara that she carried everywhere she went.

*“Stand in the light. Claim the space they tried to steal from us.”*

Grace looked up through the wings toward the brilliant lights, a peaceful, radiant smile spreading across her face.

She was no longer hiding in the steam of the back room. She was standing directly in the center of the light, her broken stitches mended, her daughter’s future secured, and her mother’s name written in gold where it could never be erased again.
